E-bay kit for 2.5 DOHC

Featured Replies

Do the timing belt kits sold on e-bay for the 2.5 DOHC for a 98 OBW, come with a cam seal? I bought the $250+ kit, but unsure if their is a cam seal.

I read not to use the water pump seal provided. Something about using an anabolic seal instead. Is that true?

MANY Ebay kits. Not all are the same - as you might imagine. It's not all about price.

Please specify vendor.

"do the timing belt kits"........depends which kit, there are many.

you can buy:

1. just the timing belt

2. timing belt and tensioner

3. timing belt and pulleys without tensioner

4. timing belt and pulleys and tensioner

5. various combo's of 1-4 with a water pump

6. various combo's of 1-5 with seals

etc....so there's dozens of possibilities.

you are correct - aftermarket water pump gaskets are flimsy cardboard junk. use the Subaru metal gaskets.

subaru seals are considered higher quality than some aftermarkets - i would get the timing components only through ebay, then get the seals you need from Subaru or a known Subaru OEM brand. sometimes the ebay kits come with Subaru OEM type seals.

i get the seals from subaru so i'm getting a good seal and i can get exactly what i want - like subaru water pump gasket, stuff for an oil pump reseal as well. i don't even know if there's a cost savings going with ebay for the seals.

I have used dozens and dozens of the ebay kit seals and haven't had a single failure.

I use anaerobic sealant on the water pump - no gasket. Same for the seperator plate. Not a single failure to report.

Vendor is CNS Auto Parts, South El Monte, CA. I bought there best, most complete kit, but I am still unsure what they sent. One poly bag contains three seal, but only part number is marked on each seal bag. I emailed CNS asking for a description of contents, but got no response. On the receipt, it says three kits are enclosed in the shipping box: TBS277A, 160-1120, and ET719C1. Anyone bought these kits, and know contents?? Guess I have everything. I can identify the TB, water pump, an auto tensioner, and 3 other tensioners, also an Eristic Gasket. Thanks for any help.

i'm %99 positive i've bought from CNS before but have no memory of specifics.

3 seals sounds odd - you'll need 4 cam seals and a crank seal if you're replacing that.

first part number comes up with this in google:

http://www.dragtimes.com/parts/98-99-25-SUBARU-IMPREZA-RS-LEGACY-TIMING-BELT-KIT-EJ25_140502053483.html

which looks the same as CNS's listing on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-99-2-5-SUBARU-IMPREZA-RS-LEGACY-TIMING-BELT-KIT-EJ25-/140502053483?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b693326b

shows 5 seals? is that the same PCI components of yours and the same auction you purchased (i guess not since it doesn't include water pump).

second part number is water pump, water pump oring, and water pump gasket part number, like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Boxes-GMB-Water-Pumps-Subaru-160-1120-/260645402333

3rd part number looks like a valve cover kit - cover gaskets, spark plug gaskets, and grommets:
