Thinking about doing this so I can mount a winch where the radiator is currently. I'm sure somebody has done it or attempted it, care to share some tips or pictures?

 

I dropped my engine crossmember 5" and am running a DF weber with a 2 1/2" filter, which JUST fit at stock height...so I got 5" to work with and am not opposed to cowling the hood to get more room. I'm also running an electric fan as my primary fan, so the fan issue is resolved.

A hood mounted radiator will not get the airflow it needs to cool even with the fans.

 

Why not just build a proper bumper for it and save a lot of work

mmhhmm. . . Tell that to Mike W., owner of that red hatch in the pic with the impreza scoop.

 

i did it on my old lifted ea82 i had no scoop but a massive fan in the hood the pulled hot air from the engine bay worked well.

The red hatch has a scoop, you said nothing about a scoop. When you are planing on a mod tell us everything else you are planning on doing with that mod at the time.

Yes it would get enough air and my one 12" hayden would work fine. I'm planning on making and installing louvers for the hot air to pass through the hood. I know the concept would work, its just like any other remote radiator. I'm just looking to see whats been done else where..

 

I'm going to build a proper bumper too, but the whole purpose to mounting the winch where the radiator is, is to not have it stick out and hinder approach angles. I'm just thinking about doing this, its still in the "idea" stage

Is that a stock Subaru radiator? I like how it fits behind most of the motor so carb adjustments and general motor work doesn't require moving the radiator everytime...How do you fill your system? it looks like your filler neck is on the bottom side. My only guess is that you need to lift it out to fill it and then reinstall it sealed up.

The filler is at the top by the firewall for lack of money i cut the elbow and put a small hose between it so it was level with the rad and it is the highest point so i just filled it like normal. You could have a rad place braze a new filler on the side of it. but like i said no money lol.

 

yes it was a stock subaru rad.

 

this car is long gone BTW RIP Tiny What it looked like the day befor the last wheeling adventure.
