October 12, 201114 yr Hello,i am looking for a mid 90's wagon for my wife.now i know the 2.2 is better than the 2.5.so how do i tell the difference by looking at them.i have my eye on one but i want to be sure its a 2.2. any pointers? thanks, todd:banana:
October 12, 201114 yr On the top of the engine block, near the power steering pump, there will be either a "EJ22" or "EJ25"; cast in the block. EJ22 is a 2.2 and EJ25 is a 2.5
October 12, 201114 yr 2.2 has SOHC. 2.5 has DOHC. "EJ22" or "EJ25" will be cast into the block between the PS pump and the alternator. Tag in the engine bay will have an engine code that starts with EJ22E or EJ25D. GD
October 12, 201114 yr Look at the very front of the engines. The 2.2 will have two round circles in the plastic cover that covers the cams and timing belt. The 2.5 will have four round circles in the plastic cover that covers the cams and timing belt.
October 12, 201114 yr in the 90s legacys, only the outback, the GT or the LSi 96 - 99 had the 2.5L engine from the factory. 2.2 has SOHC. 2.5 has DOHC. (this is more of a diagram than a drawing, when you see a DOHC subaru engine you'll get the point.) Edited October 12, 201114 yr by johnceggleston
October 13, 201114 yr Author Well thank you guys..the 2.2 in the block should do the trick. ..well that will sure make it easyer to be sure i got the 2.2 and not a 2.5. going to look at a 1997 legacy tommorow.thanks again guys,Todd
October 13, 201114 yr 97.... if it's not a GT (spoiler, hood scoop, etc) or an Outback then it's a 2.2. GD
October 15, 201114 yr 97.... if it's not a GT (spoiler, hood scoop, etc) or an Outback then it's a 2.2. GD Would that be true for a 98 as well? Scomber Sanctus
