EA82 cold start problem

Featured Replies

1993 Loyale w/EA82 SPFI. Normally starts instantly and runs very well. Twice recently it has failed to start. Starter cranks over well, everything sounds fine, except it doesn't even try to run. If I squirt some ether (yeah, I know....) in there and hit the starter, it fires up almost instantly. After that, it runs great. Acts as if the SPFI isn't spraying fuel into the venturi, to me. Ideas? Thanks, y'all. cnc

Sounds to me like the choke/cold start assist/whatever Subi calls it isn't functioning quite right. When you start it on ether, where are the rpms at when it catches and runs?

  • 4 weeks later...

hi i just bought an 88 wagon with spfi i believe. and my factory choke has crapped out on me i think. i live in wa and its in the 30's in the morning. so when i go to start her up in the morning it starts up fine, gets to about 1200rpms and then drops back down and dies . does this everytime so i have to give it some gas and let it rev at 2000 for a bit then i let off and it kinda wants to die but idles at 500 for a bit then slowly idles higher as it gets warmer ... any ideas would help. thanks

Have not checked for vacuum leaks but will do that now. and is spfi mean fuel injection ? im pretty sure i have a carb though ...

So this whole setup is fuel injected ? Everything says Hitachi on it ... Which is a carb right ?

And I didn't see any hoses unplugged, this looks like it's missing a hose though

And I forgot to mention that it works fine after I've driven it for 20 minutes or so . Like if I go to the store and go to start it back up it it revs up to 2000 on its own, stays there for a sec then drop back down to 1000 and idles fine.

Yah there's a fuel injector in that throttle body.

Ah ok. Any ideas on why it doesn't want to idle in the morning ?

My 1992 Loyale never started and went to 2K rpms then dropped down... always to about 1200 rpms then down to ~800. However my carb EA82 requires me to hit the gas, crank ot... it'll fire up to 2000 rpms and slowly climbs to 3000rpms. At 3000rpms ill hit the gas and the rpms drop to ~800 and car is ready to drive...

I thought SPFI was better than carb because you start and go but seems like other spfi cars have to warm up exactly like my car does.

*I apologize for punctuation, randomness or spelling as I'm on my mobile, in bed on Vicodin from wisdom teeth surgery... I just miss my USMB fix*

^ yeah that's how I thought an electric choke work but mine don't do that :/ I wish it was that easy lol I gotta let my soon warm up for a good 15 minutes ...

Nice ! I've been thinking about doing a weber swap ..

You have SPFI... Why would you go back in time and do a Weber swap?

I mean dont get me wrong, I love my Weber, and Id take it over SPFI UNLESS I already had SPFI, then Id just leave it.

In the 2nd pic, you need to put that hose back on the fitting. Hose is right under it.

Lol well I thought mine was carbed . I won't do a weber anymore I guess I'll just have to figure out what's wrong with my choke .

And what is that hose for ?

Well, I feel like a fool LOL put that hose back on and the clamp and it fired up went to 1200 rpms then dropped back down to like 700 but it didn't die! Stayed there and idled fine

As I Told you:

Vacuum Leaks.

Have you Searched for Unhooked Hoses around? ...

I'm glad that you Fixed it... Gotta Love those easy fixes :burnout:

Kind Regards.

Yep I do love those simple fixes :) Shouldn't it idle a littler higher and for a little longer though first thing in the morning ?

Hose is for the PCV system, and is the "Fresh Air" intake.

With it unhooked, unmetered air, (air not passing thru the MAF), was intering the intake system of the engine. ECU couldn't account for that air, so no extra fuel was added, hence the stalling.

Fuel injection doesn't need a long "cold start/ high idle" like carbs do.

Your's sounds like it's right.
