washington and emissions testing

Featured Replies

I would like to put a weber on my 1987 gl, Is this legal in Washington? I am confused because when I put this on there I read that I am changing/removing the emission standards on the vehicle. Sorry, if this sounds like a simple question, but if I don't ask, I don't learn.

Technically it's not legal. But if you do it right it will pass a smog shop. It's all about the implementation. Search is your friend.

if you already have your 2012 tabs than you will never have to pass another emissions test... ever... but if you still have your 2011 tabs. you will have one more...

in Washington state, there is no inspection, if it passes the sniffer you will get your tabs. now if it fails then you will not be able to get it to pass unless you have all the OEM emissions equipment still in working order. however that is not always true eather. many shops will just take your $150 and attempt a repair and grant you a waiver.

Having driven two Brats for many years with a weber, I can verify that a properly tuned weber will pass the sniffer test with flying colors. Are you local to Seattle? If so, I can pass on the information about the local emissions specialist who will likely be able to get your car to pass emissions for a lot less than the $150. If testing is still required on your car, run it through just to see where you stand.

Spanaway looks close enough to Seattle. Sorry I wasn't paying attention earlier.

Why is 2012 my last test?

Why is 2012 my last test?

Check out the rules for emission testing and ages of vehicles. Vehicles over 25 years old do not need emissions testing in King County.

Why is 2012 my last test?
Caboobaroo has it correct; although I think the 25 year rule is statewide; it's certainly that way where I live in Snohomish county. You can find out more here: http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/emissions.html

Odd, this URL doesn't consider 25+ year old cars exempt. Maybe that exemption has changed. I certainly hope not.

I went looking for local emissions rules because some rural areas (sorry I consider Spanaway rural---no offense intended) are exempt from emissions testing.

If you haven't put the weber on already, you're welcome to get an emissions test any time, even if it's not due. A passed test document is good for one year and will get you past the 25 year exemption if it's still law and if you pass the test sometime in January 2012 or later. But then again, if you don't pass you're not obligated to get your car passed until you renew your tabs.

Thank you all for the input. I think i will just wait a while to put the weber on, my tabs are up in February.

In that case do the emissions test now. Then add the weber shortly thereafter; you'll have two years to go before the next emissions test and you'll fall under the 25 year exemption if it's active in your area.

how would I find out is the 25 year exemption active in my county ?

I'm pretty sure its all of washington that has the 25-year-old-car-exempt rule. A quick google search of pierce county emissions rules will confirm that.

If you live in ANYWHERE in WA then your car will be exempt after it hits 25 yrs. There are many counties that don't even have emissions testing.

If you had your car tested in 2011 you will never have to go through emissions again.

Odd years are tested on odd years, even years are tested on even years.

Odd years are tested on odd years, even years are tested on even years.

Not quite correct. I'm not sure at what year, that switches; but later model cars are tested in the opposite year. For example, our '99 Forester is due for retest in 2012; yet our '84 Brat was tested in even years (until the 25 year exemption took place). And the OP's '87 GL is apparently due in Feb. 2012. If he passes with his next test, he'll be past the 25 year exemption in 2014.

it is not odd years test on odd years any more. since they changed the rules to cars dont need to be tested the first 5 years or after 25 years.

so if you bought a car in 2005 then the first test date would be 2010. thus makeing it odd year even test year.

and yeah the 25+ rule is state wide. not county wide.

i have the WA state emissions book if you want to know any more info. i am a WA state emissions certified technition. i have taken the class and recirtified 3 times now.

do I still have to get a test in 2014 or is 2012 my last one?

If it passes in 2012, that'll be your last required emissions test for your '87.
