Howdy Y'all,

 

Got another problem for the board. I was driving my car this morning at about 1 am ( just got off work ) and I heard a strange thumping griding noise coming from about my left foot. I slowed down, pulled over, had a look, nothing was physically missing, and got back in and went to let out the clutch (while in first gear ) and apply a little gas. All that happened was a grinding noise and a lurch forward. I tried again a few times, but nothing happened. So I got to walk home (only about 2 miles, but still) at 1 am. Does anyone here have ANY idea of what could cause these symptoms? Does this sound like a CV boot problem, Tranny, or something else? Everyone's expertise would be very helpful.

Possibly your left hand front brake seized, try leaving you parking brake off and try pushing the car forward slightly.

sounds like a cv but ive never heard of em just letting go without other signs (like noise when turning)

Actually there was a lot of noise when turning more than lane changes, I thought it was the power steering?

Sounds like a CV to me. I had a CV joint crumble on a FWD volkswagen rabbit. The car wouldn't budge and all there was was a bad grinding noise. Pull the left drive shaft and you'll be able to feel the cv joint when you move it around, it will probably feel like its all broken up... because it is. No big deal though, if that is the problem. Usually less than $75 at your local parts store. Good luck!

Put the car in 4 wheel drive and see if it moves when you try to take off.On my 84 wagon I had a similar problem. Turns out the splines on the shaft had chewed the splines on the brake disk and the shaft was spinning inside the smoothed out disk.I put it in 4X4 and drove it home.

If it was making the noises you describe, it is probably the outer CV. The new shaft you probably need will come complete with the inner and outer CVs. Just pull the old one and put in the new one. Just don't return the core until you have the new one all the way in and tested. I was burnt one time because the new "remanufactured" shaft had a different thread to it, so my old axel nut didn't fit right. If you know what you're doing, you can replace the shaft in less than an hour. If you dont, then it might take you all day, but it is still doable.

Alright, thanks a lot spidey, i guess ill just do that then. Sounds simple but ill probably be here all day doing it .

 

I would do that, dave, but the rear axles were out of the car when i bought it, definately gotta put those in.
