January 26, 201214 yr my 81 brat just went through some brake fluid and after checking all four corners and doing a run though on the brake lines i could not find a noticeable leak and when i filled the reserve i got my brakes back no prob yet im scared to take it on the road...i'm gonna bleed the brakes just to be safe but any ideas as to wth is going on?:confused::-\:-\
January 26, 201214 yr check for a master cylinder leak. would be under the resevoir on either side of the fire wall. so under the rezzy and under the pedal.

Any brake fluid leak is a problem! Have you removed the drums (assuming you have stock brakes in the rear) and verified no leaking wheel cylinders and no wetness within?

Remember: An Old Brake fluid with enough Humidity, could evaporate easily if you use your brakes very much, in example: when you Drive a lot Downhill while using the brakes all the time, instead the gearbox to keep the speed. Meaning i didnt find it dripping anywhere..and i have disc on all four corners...and loyal when i stop for a light or anything i use the engine to slow me down as much as possible
January 27, 201214 yr If you not see concrete evidence of leaks, then there should not be a problem. Perhaps the fluid levels were not checked frequently enough and you noted low brake fluid one day. As your brakes wear out, the fluid level in the reservoir will go down. Not sure if this is the case here. If it was totally empty when you noticed this and filled it back up, you should bleed the system. Did the warning lamp alert you to the brake problem?
January 27, 201214 yr Author Well it was about a month month and a half since i last checked em..and what made me notice it was when i was backing out of the drive way my foot went t the floor before my brakes did anything
January 29, 201214 yr I would look around the master cylinder. You could also be possibly be pulling the fluid thru the break booster and burning it.
May 24, 201213 yr im having a problem on my gen 1 79 brat ive bled the brakes 4 time and all air is out and doesnt lose any fluid and no leaks but still have to pump brakes 2 or 3 times to get solid pressure only thing i havnt done is checked pads but doesnt make sense to me:banghead: if the pads were bad then why does it get good pressure and stop on a dime after acouple pumps ? please help!
May 24, 201213 yr master cylinder Yep. No visible leaks=MC is bad. You usually can see the paint bubbling on the booster if it's been leaking for a while. When you replace it, MAKE SURE to read the instructions for bench bleeding it BEFORE you install it. Every maker has a different procedure to bench bleed. AND when bench bleeding, DO NOT bottom the master cyl. plunger out. you WILL tear seals and be replacing it shortly if you do.
May 31, 201213 yr what do u mean internal leak like in the booster? and mine builds pressure after a few pumps like they need to be bled but i have already ?
May 31, 201213 yr Internal leak in the MC. It can build pressure but not build pressure from a single press. No leaks+Bled+crappy pedal=blown MC, or MC is on it's way out.
