March 21, 200422 yr High whine and putting out 14v at idle, pegging ammeter above 2,000 rpm. Any reason why I 'shouldn't' be looking for a replacement over in the marrketplace?

March 22, 200422 yr also another cause is the bearings could be on the way to failing. Had the same thing happen on my v6 '88 Camaro. I thought it would be all right to drive down to NAPA and get a new belt and a new alternator. Started pulling out and the alternator froze on me and broke the serpentine belt.
