Help, wifes car died...

Recommended Posts

Ok, wife tried doing me a favor this weekend, and I'm at my wits end :(

She went to a local car parts place and got a friend of hers who works there to help her change the cap, rotor, plugs, plugwires and air filter.

They put the plug wires on wrong, and tried to start it up...

it backfired once and just continued cranking.

I've got the wires in the right location and firing orders,

I've tested for spark, and though it seems a wee bit weak it's there, and the car was running with this coil before.

the cap and rotor seem to be the right ones, and with a timing light I verified that I'm getting spark through all of the plug wires.

the old cap was rusty in one tower, and well carboned inside.

This is a 87 GL wagon, 4WD 5SP manual, SPFI...

>question quality of parts

>CHAMPION is crap, use NGK

>fuel? sensors? timing?

Napa -gold- plugwires, Echlin cap and rotor, NGK plugs

Seems to be getting fuel, and I've tried using a little starting fluid on it, no luck...

Not sure on the timing, can't find my timing light :(

"the cap and rotor seem to be the right ones, and with a timing light I verified that I'm getting spark through all of the plug wires." waht happened to that timing light?

is a sensor disconnected or something mis-adjusted

I'm just a carb guy

The rotation of the rotor is CCW, and plug firing order is 1324. Alot of people have made the mistake on the disty rotation, me included.

A terrible throught ran through my head as I read this but as I think about it it may be what is going on. My thought was when the engine backfired it may have caused the timing belt to slip. I hope this is not what happened.

its possible...

i personally have seen a 1000hp blown methanol engine

sneeze and bust a cam in half.....

sucked cause we spent alot of time getting the suspension back together so he go race again oh well

66" tires are heavy hehe

even if the belt slipped it should still randomly burp .. and fart

what color is the spark you get from the plugs and wires?

if its orangish thats kinda weak

and remember it takes more voltage to jump the gap of a plug under pressure ...

so if its a weak orange spark then it might be no spark at all under combustion chamber pressure

the newer wires may be a higher resistance than the old one's <dam radio suppression crap>

but double check your firing order

try the old wires if you have them

and still say thanks to the wife i can't even get mine to check the dam oil ....
