head gasket ?

Featured Replies

I found this on the passenger side of my 1987 gl, how serious is this and how hard is it to fix? and is it safe to drive?

Is that an actual hole?

Safe to drive - well - are you using an oil? Any oil in the coolant? Loosing any oil or coolant?

Does thatr have some liquid around it, if so, what does it smell like?

All of my fluids are normal, as far as I can tell. yes it's wet I think that it's coolant.

Is it sweet in smell? As long as you have no cross contamination and it is a small leak, I don't see why not for now.

You can try subaru coolant conditioner which is a stopleak.

that is the mating surfaces of the cam carrier and head. I can't quite imagine how you'd have coolant coming from there. oil, yes, coolant, no.

i cant see the pic too well on my phone but if your intake gasket is leaking you might get coolant there. i know you recently changed carbs (youre welcome lol). did you change anything else? my bad if this is a different car or i couldnt see well enough

nope just carb, same car ... Thanks It's working great

well if you wanna drive it over this weekend we can have a look-see. pressure test?

that's not the headgasket. that's the cam carrier mating surface.

if it's coolant then it is not coming from that gasket/seal there because the cam carrier only has oil in it.

if it's coolant it's probably the intake manifold gasket, a fairly common leakage point.

i would simply clean it and see if and where it returns.

not likely to be any big deal or cause immediate concern or issues.

those gaskets can get worse though and leak into the intake manifold and get into the cylinders so you may want to think about replacing those gaskets at some point in the next year or three.

the subaru intake manifold gaskets are far higher quality than aftermarket cardboard.

I am really broke and really busy, but as soon as I have funds and some time. I will shoot you an message, thanks for the offer! :drunk:

one other thing i just remembered; when we got our 86 wag (whitey) i had mystery coolant on top of my motor. it turned out to be the coolant hose up to the carb/IM. long story short; pinhole+pressure=squirt. btw i dont have a pressure tester, i was just suggesticating. You are welcome to come by whenever if you wanna noodle it out. hth, RV
