EA81 lift kit Vs.??

Featured Replies

Never put a lift kit on a subaru... What would be better; a suspension lift kit or body lift kit. are there write ups on both. Thanks

Im pretty sure You could go with a 2" suspention lift. More than 2" your going to have to drop the subframe, Tranny mounts am such. One eye on here has some really good stuff on lifts.

4" lift is pretty common. 3 at the frame, an 4 at the struts.

On an ea81 you have to drop the subframe when you lift it. Otherwise your cv axles will explode. Ea82s can be lifted 2" without dropping the subframe

I personally think the best built ones are a combination but its hard to nail down a precise recipe.

RX springs add about 3/4"

I like the 2-3" lift kits the most. I think the 4" is too much and honestly the objective is to make clearance for larger tires. In my opinion, anything beyond 2" makes tires be far to large to turn, power, etc.

Im not saying it can't be effectively done but trying to run 30" tires is crazy and adding massive amounts of lift blocks doesn't add to that much more tire working.

I personally like the SJR offerings a lot but almost all of the lift kit builders seem to be putting out a decent product.

Do RX springs have a stiffer rate or more coils then other 4WD EA82 springs?

I disagree. The extra walkover height in the middle, and high rocker clearance is gained with a larger lift, regardless of tires.

A 2" lift will let you clear bigger tires, but only with lots of trimming and bashing.

I run a 29" tire, with an EJ18 and D/R 5spd in my EA81. no problem turning tires.

6" lift. Gives me tons of room for walkover of big boulders and steep waterbreaks.

for an EA81 I'd go 4" or 6" for sure. Even body lift. Adding suspension lift to an EA81 makes for clacky axles and eventually will eat them.

i put loyale front end parts in lenghten the strut bar and put arms in backwarads moves the front wheel forward 3 in and out 2 in with loyale front struts then i only need a 2 in block on strut and end up with 12 in of ground clearance with 235 75 15

Your tires don't rub on the inside of the wheel wells with a 29" with an EA81 body? I would like to see a photo please.

On my 83 I have the crossbred performance kit installed. With impreza struts it sits higher than stock ea81 struts. I also have the EJ CV axle end which helps with the axle angle a lot. It does about 10 degrees more range of motion than the ea81 axle did. I think if I can figure out a control arm replacement, I can run as much tire as anybody with a lift-without a body lift on the front of the car. Handling should be better but even better is the modern wheel bearings, brakes, and axles that can handle the EJ22 or more.

I have built and driven a lot of lifted rigs and I wouldn't do another one with solely a body lift. They look kindof cool but I think that's where it ends for me.
