April 18, 201213 yr Hey gang, Just want to be super confident before I make the investment. I'm refurbishing my new '96 Legacy OUtback Wagon, 2.2L. ~200k miles. Runs great! Fixed up exuaust, brakes shifter linkage, etc etc. I need struts in front and back. I'd like to start with the back simply because it's cheaper. I also want to get an alignment after I do the front, and I don't have the cash for that right now. Can I get away with $95/pair "APX" struts on ebay? I don't do any offroading. Just looking for good cheap struts for city and highway driving. Again, bonus for cheap-but I don't want to get total crap. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1230-RS-Subaru-SHOCKS-STRUTS-Rear-Set-2-Pcs-NEW-Warranty-/320833393884?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1996%7CMake%3ASubaru%7CModel%3ALegacy%7CSubmodel%3AOutback&vxp=mtr&hash=item4ab32914dc#vi-ilComp $95/pair seems cheap, when they go for nearly $100 each from both Subaru and auto parts stores. Thanks in advance I appreciate it. I know this has been discussed, but I'm just looking for first hand accounts so I can be confident before plunking down the cash. ~p
April 18, 201213 yr maybe more than you want to spend - but KYB is the 'go to' brand for most folks. check prices at RockAuto. about $125 a pair. dunno about gabriel, but folks do NOT seem to like Monroe. as for alignment, if the tires are not worn unevenly and you have no other issues, just mark the position of the alignment bolt when and put it back the same way when you install th enew struts. likely you will be close enough. Of course, you could still spring for an alignment after a coupla more paychecks. there are DIY alignment instructions and maybe videos online too. Edited April 18, 201213 yr by 1 Lucky Texan
April 18, 201213 yr KYB has been my choice of struts for years. KYBs are excellent at a good price. They last a long time. I have seen them for sale on e-bay motors.
April 19, 201213 yr http://www.justsuspension.com/kyb I found this website recently. Less expensive than even our shop can get them from a supplier. It's where I'm going when my car needs them again! Emily
April 19, 201213 yr the KYB's are really popular on other subaru forums so i went with them on my outback. they're fine. i got them for $60 and $61 each either using online discounts at advance auto parts or something like that (for one) and the other off ebay.
April 20, 201213 yr I can source KYB's thru my shop and ship them. My supplier has them in stock so no waiting 1-4 days from the warehouse like the justsuspension site. Most likely I can beat the justsuspension.com pricing. Not sure I can beat their shipping though.
