Hey guys

I have not been on in awhile and this is the first I have seen the new and improved board.

Do we have a search button any longer??

 

My 1996 legacy 2.2 automatic threw a P0302 cyl #2 misfire

What have I got??

PS---just started it and was running rough....no warning

Has all OEM wires/plugs etc but about 32,000 miles ago...so they "should" be good...

 

Coil pack? I have no idea how to test it

Swap that plug wire with a different one. See if the misfire moves. If not, pull the plug and see what it looks like. #2 is fairly easy to get to on that engine.

update....this is my sons car....when he called me, I walked him thru hooking up my code reader--thats when we found the 0302 code

I had him erase it.  He then started the car, and of course no change.  Several hours later I get home ...start it and it runs like the normal champion it is....drove

it around...later he went to the mall-- 35 min. trip....everything is fine. 

What could cause such an intermittent problem like this??

I hate this kind of thing as you never know when it will  strike again.....

 

oh one more thing...when he first started it and it was running rough...the CEL was flashing...I never heard of it flashing b4...what signifcance is this?

The CEL flashes when there's a constant misfire. Was it wet while this was happening? Raining or really damp?

When plug wires are chafing or starting to wear out, they'll arc only when it's damp, then the problem will clear up when it's dry.

 

If it happens again try to figure out if it's running rich (ie. injector is firing, but plug isn't). It should smell strongly of gas out the exhaust. If you pull the plug it'll be wet.

If it's not running rich and/or you confirm the plug is firing while it has a misfire, it's likely an injector issue.

32k is aged for copper plugs but they shouldn't be causing misfires yet. Check the plug wells for moisture.

Based on the intermittant nature of the issue I'd be leaning toward sparkplug wires. Try replacing them or if they are not at all old, try unplugging them from both ends and re-connecting them.
