October 4, 201312 yr HEy all, I was trying to fins out is it possible to entirely swap out the ea82 engine and replace it with ANYTHING, other than an old model engine. Price is whatever, meaning if the Trans has to be new too, thats cool i just want to know about size and a secure safe fit. Thanks.
October 4, 201312 yr It's entirely possible to replace the EA-82T with just about any later model 4-cylinder Subaru engine, especially the EJ series. Try searching the board, you'll get some ideas, but here's one for now, if money's no object... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/126559-retro-gl-10-turbo-build/
October 4, 201312 yr Yes, you can retrofit an ej22 or ej25 from 90's model subarus and later. You will ahve to use a bellhousing adapter, or swap in a matching trans and hybrid the mounts and custo length the driveshaft. Dimensionally, later motor and trans fit in the body. Look in the "subaru retrofitting" forums
March 20, 201412 yr Author I have another issue. Do you know how you can switch into four wheel drive in this subbie i mentioned. do any other subarus do that? because i dont want to lose out on that feature if and when I do and engine/tranny swap.
March 21, 201412 yr The EJ engine/transmission combos are full time AWD. No switch required. If you keep your old transmission, you will keep the FWD/4WD capability with a switch.
