Wheel Backspace What will or wont work?

Featured Replies

I am going to do a 6 lug conversion and throw some new rims on my 83 wagon. I read on dude with the GINORMOUS brat's page that 3.5 or so backspacing works fine.... But he has Huge tires... I am not going to lift mine... I am just looking to put nice wheels on it. Is there any advise you all can give be before I go out and buy a set of rims that doesn't let me turn anymore???

As well how wide can they be??? I'd assube the thinner the better. Alot of the 6 lug rims are for trucks.... I dont want my tires stickin out past my wheel wells

That's going to be a problem then, as the subaru wheels have fairly unique backspacing. Well - at least I haven't seen the same on any 6 lug rims I've played with. All the truck rims your going to find will leave your tires sticking out a good 2" or more..... maybe something from a car? I don't even know if something like that exists. You could call up stockton wheel and have them make whatever you like probably. Wouldn't be cheap tho.

Yea... not looking to spend all that much... Dude with the big blue brat says that 3.5 inch backspacing has worked fine for him, although he has a big ol lift and 15x10" with 35" tires mounted onto that.... I have found some 17x8" that have a 3.25" backspacing. I may be a little wide still but seems to me that that would work just fine. If I have to get fender flares I will, I'm hoping thats not the case though... they are kinda ugly

GIMOUNGUS, I like that!

That would be me I assume, and yes they do stick way out. Now that is inevitable with 16 inch wide tires and those wheels. Wheels like that would not be an effective solution for your needs. You would be better off staying 4 lug and using pugs (pugeot wheels).

Pugs are hideous though... I'm hoping that some day my car can steal trophies from some chromed out honda at hot import nights.... Any other suggestions for a nice looking rim that can fit??????

I have your Ginourmous Brat as my background by the way.... NICE! I Like it alot! That blue looks Sweet too!

The solution to your problem is to convert to a 5 lug suspension. Then you could put pretty much any aftermarket wheel that fits a newer subaru on.

Going to Hot Import Nights? I am... I'm "showing" hehehehehe

Its this Sat. the 1st of May. $22 to get in.

SO.. Can I just rob a Legacy or something from the yard of all its hub, brake and attatched parts of that then just bolt em all onto my Old Wagon???? Or is it going to take alot more craftiness than first thought??? Has Subaru changed much of their brakeing system over the years??? If it is just going to be like the rear disk conversion than I'm on it no problem. I lack the equiptment to do alot of custom fab stuff though.

XT6 parts are the norm, it is not too difficult and doesn't demand any custom fab. At that point anything (Nearly) that fits an Impreza/legacy etc. will fit.

Aren't the xt6 still a 4 lug??? That is the wedge looking car correct... I saw one today that is... and it was a 4 lug.

Maybe older models are 5 lug??

Most XTs you will see are 4 lug, the 5 lug ones are less common, and I am certain that it was only on the XT6 which is the 6 cyl powered one.

What kind of backspace should I look for when converting to 6 lug and getting a 4 Inch lift? I am trying to go for a 14" rim with the Super Swamper SSR tire. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot. Also, what is the end bolt pattern after converting to 6 lug?
