Does anybody know of a good free program to open Excel files? I would love to see what this is all about.

Microsoft has a free Excel 97/2000 viewer on their website:

(They also have viewers for the other Office apps as well. Unfortunately, the Excel viewer only supports up to "2000" but some of the other viewers are more recent (e.g., the PowerPoint Viewer is available for PowerPoint 2003 docs).)

Cool, I wish I would have checked back here sooner, I spent about two and a half hours trying to find one. Then just gave up and went to the microsoft web site and found the one. But o-well.
