i'm thinking it should be a straight shot from a legacy wagon to an outback wagon. let me know if there are any surprises i should be aware of

thanks

Don't know if it bothers you or not, but be aware that a '97 2.2 is an interference engine.

Use the search feature with "swap" and you'll find all you need to know.

i'll try that

Hello, I'm new to Subarus. I just bought a '95 impreza wagon/hatchback. I saw that a '97 is interference engine. Does that cover the '95 2.2??  thx  didn't mean to jump on here. I'm just reading all I can.    B)

to the original poster - Ej22 is single port exhaust so carry the exhaust manifold over with the engine.

use EJ25 flexplate (if automatic) on EJ22 engine.

the EJ25 will be an EGR equipped engine.  if the 1997 isn't EGR it'll have a check engine light due to that.  but it will still plug and play and run great anyway.

install a metal separator plate and seal it on the EJ22.

install a new timing component kit - belt, pulleys, tensioner - they're like $100 for Gates kits on amazon - great deal.

no - 1995's are non-interference.

EJ22's are non-inteference up until 1996

Interference 1997 and up.

Welcome, scdrtramp!  The wonderful EJ22 engine was non-interference from its introduction in '89/'90 through the '96 model year.  It became interference with the '97s.  So you're okay with your '95!

Love the 2.5 DOHC to 2.2 SOHC swaps.  I've done many of them, no complaints.

Hey, im doing the same thing!

Albeit on a much slower timescale...

Just make sure both engines have EGR or both engines dont have EGR. Otherwise your exhaust manifold will be the only difference. Use the flywheel from the 2.5
