January 20, 201511 yr I'm switching trannys in my 93 loyale from the 5 speed push button 4x4, to the older 5 speed with the hi/lo range 4x4. Are the gear ratios all the same on these? or are they different? The tranny I got to put in is out of a 87 gl. If they made more then just 1 gear ratio how many did they make?
January 20, 201511 yr turbo cars and autos were 3.7. your dual range will be the same as your pushbutton. there is a tag on the rear diff you can double check. you should have a 3.9
January 20, 201511 yr Auto FWD trannys were 3.7 Auto 4WD were 3.9 too Yes, the D/R 5spd will be the same as your currant S/R 5spd. Cheers, -Tom
January 20, 201511 yr The easiest way to know if it will work or not is to look at the rear diff on your car. There's a metal plate affixed to it (well, there should be) that'll tell you the gear ratio. It's most likely going to be 3.9, though could be 3.7 Point is, it has to match the gear ratio of the trans. If that hi/lo came from a normally aspirated 87 GL, then it's a 3.9. If your rear diff is a 3.9 as well, you're set.
January 21, 201511 yr Not as simple as that. Different markets & different years had different front diff ratios. The rear diff ratio must be the same. You can check each tranny by removing the drain plug, marking on of the teeth on the crown wheel, then spinning the gearbox by hand to count the teeth. 37 means you've got a 3.7 39 means 3.9 Is the matching rear diff for the dual range box available?
January 22, 201511 yr Any 4x4 non turbo 5mt with 23 spline axle is 3.9 gear. This is a direct swap between your 2 cars. You will want the dual range shifter cover plate to match the interior. Turbo 5mt 4wd are 3.7 gear for push button, full time, and rx dual range with 25 spline axle are 3.7. Exception is xt6 full time 3.9 3at is 3.9 non turbo 87 and up and turbo 3.7. 85 and 86 3at may be 3.7 Fwd drama is talker gear than either 4wd but not sure on the rstio
