iriejedi
Cali? I'm in Colorado, and deal multiple altitudes and winterous climates. Do you still have factory headgaskets? How old is the timing belt set up? Those tensioners can fail and they will knock. Check your oil for silver or gold particles.
man&chico
Prob's with defrost in Forester's? Mine only clears in the lower middle of the view-glass..seems like there might be some sort of substance coating the inside. Not a problem except around freezing. man&chico
Hi Iriej, Yeh, noise is a sharp KLAK-KLAK-KLAK and sounds like inside the timing-belt cover, middle to driver's side. In about 5 minutes it gets quiet. Would the tensioner do that? I guess I have to make me a spec. tool, and pool the poo-lee..have a look-see, eh? iriejedi
I've seen all kinds of weird things with bad tensioners. No telling for sure unless you swap it with a known good one. How old is the timing belt set up? Also you can drain your oil into a clean pan, cover and let settle for 24 hrs. Pour off the old oil and look at the bottom of the oil catch pan. I warm the car up usually and drain after stopping. If the oil is not that old and you kept it clean then putting it back in the engine works. Your simply trying to see if there's tiny bits of metal present. This will tell you if the crank bearings are going bad.
