February 25, 201511 yr Ok everyone I'm in need of a little direction. ECS light came on so I got the code read. It's throwing the code for the Vehicle Speed sensor. The vehicle in question is a 1983 DL, 1.6H, 5mt. She is running 94,750 Miles at this point. Could someone please give me a few ideas on where to find this part. On that same note could someone explain what EA 81, EA 82, etc refers to? And how and where does my car fit into that terminology. Tall order today and Thank you in advance. V/r, Doogie
February 25, 201511 yr EA81 and EA82 refer to the engine designation. That is the number stamped om the engine block. As for the speed sensor, you might want to try clearing the code fist to see if it was a transient occurrence. If it comes back it may be an issue but of no I wouldn't worry.
February 25, 201511 yr This thread is Weird somehow... ... 1983 DL, 1.6H, 5mt. ... ...Are you SURE that you are refering to a 1983 Subaru with 1.6 engine? ► The 1.6 engine on 1983, shall be an EA71 ... ► No Vehicle Speed Sensors were used on a EA71 of that vintage... ► How you got "Read" the "Codes" ? Kind Regards. Edited February 25, 201511 yr by Loyale 2.7 Turbo
February 26, 201511 yr Author The car is definitely a 1983 DL 1.6H Hard top. Yes the engine is definitely carbureted. When the shop read the codes they told me it is the vehicle speed sensor. Now on a logical point this is my first subaru and I am definitely trying to learn as much about her as I go. I just bought the Haynes repair manual for it. Making sense of that manual is proving to be interesting. Edited February 26, 201511 yr by doogie
February 26, 201511 yr Maybe if you provide symptoms of the problem your car is experiencing, we could help you in a Better Way. Kind Regards.
February 27, 201511 yr I suspect your shop misinterpeted the code.It would be nice to know the code #. I`m thinking it was 33 which some internet sources say is for the VSS 83-85.My 84 factory shop manual does NOT agree. It actually refers to the ECU AT selection pin being ungrounded because of a bad wiring harness or ECU fault. Is your car automatic? Or maybe it was code 22 which IS for the VSS for 84s,but,not 83s. On 83s code 22 is comnpletely normal w/the engine not running. I do not think your car has a VSS. If it did,it would be near the speedometer.
