Advice on knocking noise 87 GL Wagon

Featured Replies

I have a 1987 gl wagon, 5 speed, carb, no turbo, and it has developed a loud knocking noise. It sounds like the lifters and the prev. owner said it can do this time to time. I changed the oil, put in 10w-40, and It still knocks. Does anyone have any ideas about quick fixing this prob. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Jay

add mmo or sea foam

tighten oil pump bolts

there is also a factory service manual procedure, also might be in owner's manual

I've only heard lifters make a ticking sound, loud knocking sounds like something else? Moving, sitting still? Does sound increase with RPM'S? In gear, out of gear?

Need to know - is it really "knocking?" Or is it "ticking" like half the EA82's on the road? If it's the latter, do a search for "lifter noise" or "ticking" and you will come up with a veritable plethora of Info.
