January 22, 201610 yr Trying to figure out what route to go for a more characteristic subaru sound than stock mufflers. So far the nicest clip we've found is the link below. Not sure if what they did would be cost effective. Would love any suggestions and sound clips!! Edited January 22, 201610 yr by Kbsubie
January 23, 201610 yr Bash out your cat, straight pipe to a decent muffler in the back. 2.25 after the header.
January 23, 201610 yr Generally any of the "performance" (fart can) mufflers off of ebay etc. will give you some nice throaty Subaru growl. If you're wanting the signature sound, you don't have to pay much. Performance overall seems to lag more with the big expensive exhausts on these cars. Open muffler will give you plenty of sound. You'll love it for at least 3 hours until the headache sets in and you can't use your CD player anymore.
January 23, 201610 yr Subie growl is easy to get. A glasspack right behind the cat, and a decent muffler in the stock location. Some 2" pipe between them, and a 2.5" resonator tip. Nothing expensive or exotic required
January 24, 201610 yr By behind are you saying before, or after the cat, exhaust flow-wise. Also would just replacing the cat with a glass pack have the same effect you think?
January 24, 201610 yr After the cat. I never recommend anyone hollow, or remove a catalytic converter. Mostly cause i dont know where they live, or what hoops the have to jump thru to get inspections, or registrations. Where i live, its no holds barred on the exhaust. We dont have safety, or emissions to pass. I know its tough in some places, so i leave that up to whoever is doing the mods. That said, all my current cars are "emissions legal" in most areas...visually anyway
January 24, 201610 yr Found this sound clip of my former coupe. It is running a full stainless 2 inch exhaust from the heads all the way to the tailpipe. There is a high flow Cat on there as well. Muffler is a standard parts store Magnaflow. Its got a nice deep growl. Ask its new owner what he thinks .
January 25, 201610 yr I installed a 2" exhaust from the Y-pipe back with a SS Magnaflow many years ago. I really like the sound of the Magnaflow. Not very loud in cab at all but sounds awesome when my wife was leaving the house in it to pick up flowers at the nursery.
January 26, 201610 yr cut off the exhaust with a sawzall just after the hanger in the back, in front of the axles. Best sound you'll get on the ea82, ej22 as well. Leave the cat.

Make sure to keep stocked up on ibuprofen Even at 17 I had to throw the muffler back on my 99 LGT, headaches everytime I drove

Then people look because of the sound and realize you are in fact not a teenaged boy.
January 29, 201610 yr Just cut my cat out, replaced it with a cherry bomb, then threw a Honda muffler on the end. TOO QUIET! Back to the drawing board.
