Loyale wheel bearings

Featured Replies

i replaced the front wheel bearing on my 1993 loyale. a few months later the driver side went bad again... im not sure why but someone said to me that it might be because i tightened the axle nut without a torque wrench and could have over tightened. i was hoping someone out there could tell me the proper torque to use for when i put some new bearing in, and any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

Torque on the castle nut is about 145 ft-lbs.  There are many videos and pictorials on how to replace the wheel bearings.  Search this forum and youTube for MilesFox

There is  a steel spacer between the inner and outer bearing, so over torquing shouldn't cause bearing failure.

I had alot of problem's like that too.. i think it has to do with the right seal... winter months always got me.. I think water was getting into mine... multiple times.. I haven't had that problem for at least a couple years now thank gaudd!

I always assembled it back together with the washer and cone.. and if your cone is thrashed it's best to get another one.. even from the Wrecking yard.

One extra tip, is once you achieve 145lbs as Dee 2 stated don't back it up to put the cotter pin in.. keep going to the next opening.

I always re-torque or check it after driving it to make sure it didn't loosen up after a shakedown run after installation.    Also unfortunately many aftermarket parts are complete junk straight out of the box.  They may may have sent you a set of bearings that have been used as wheel chocks for the warehouse forklift for the past 20 yrs.

Yes. Not backing off and re checking after some driving is a good idea.

I have heard that you need to grease the bearings ,even if they look pre lubed .  the grease they use is not good  . it  just   makes it easy for them to assemble them at the factory .
