rear differential replacement 1996 legacy 2.2 automatic

Featured Replies

After recent confirmation of my pinion bearing's demise I am starting my search for a rear differential for my 1996 2.2 legacy auto

Where on the back of the differential is the stamp that tells me which gears I have?

Just want to make sure I get the correct part.

Should be a 4.11.

EJ25's with MT are 4.11 final drive as well - so they would be a good interchange option.

you might be able to tell if you can find the stickers mentioned here:
http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/118507-95-legacy-gear-ratios/

if your ring and pinion itself aren't damaged you could swap that set into any gear ratio rear diff.

Cool,

It is still actually in the car. I am not sure how long its been like this (just got the car running) and Its not too bad yet.

If I drive the car on the highway with the windows down I cannot hear it and if the windows are up over 65 mph I cannot hear it either (road noise is louder).

I may just keep driving it around town until it gets really loud before I take it apart to see.

My friend said It would probably last a while.

so this one will fit?

314

5x      ??

0 kn7  ??

on the top of it I couldnt make out but I def saw a B

and perhaps an M or a W in another spot on top.

Hi,

AFAIK, nothing since '95+ has the FD ratio listed.

Although those ebay listings might fit, Subaru may have changed the rear axle splines or pinion flange bolt spacing, etc.  to make things 'complicated'.

As noted above if you stick w/the rear diff from the '95-'98 (maybe '99, too) EJ22 Autos or EJ25 5-speeds it'll be plug-n-play - this applies to the Legacy, Impreza and Forester.

Car-part.com also shows some up to 2004...FWIW.
