need recommendations for rear struts

Featured Replies

Aye!

Now that the car is moving.

It is time for fixing the struts..

I am asking for what you like and why you

Chose whatever for struts you have for your car.

the car that needs struts is a 98 outback.

I will do the rears first but, it probably

needs all four....

The car seems to sit well...despite the bouncey ride

what makes sense.????

. do they sell a strut with the spring?

I can buy it either

Way.. I have spring compressors....

Can some new springs bring it up higher?

Like another inch or so?...

Thanks, Micky

i've got a '94 legacy wagon. i could not find new springs when i looked for new struts. but, i did some reading and got some kyb's. then i actually broke a spring and had to find some used struts from a totaled legacy to get the springs. it came with oem suby struts. very nice. but, honestly, not any better than the new kyb's i have the kyb's for later when these suby struts wear out.

i live on a country road, so i wanted something that behaved well on the constant action of rough terrain...not just something that responded well enough to minor variations on pavement or the occasional bump into a driveway. i have what i think works best weighing in price

new springs will certainly help you regain stance. but, another inch? depends how much your old/current springs have actually drooped from the original height....if you're talking acquiring new oem springs.

when i put new springs....brand new....in my '92 4runner, it was a big difference. an inch, atleast. never measured, but the vehicle doesn't sag in the rear anymore. it's level....maybe even a little raked. and, the ride quality is tremendously different. those old coils were like riding on 2x4's.

I'd get KYB struts, and either 1" spacers or a 2" lift from Scott (SJR), and maybe springs depending on your goals

Aftermakets generally don't support loaded atruts for Subarus.

Just about everyone in subaru world uses KYB unless they're going coil over/conversions.

I think mid to late 90's legacy and OBWs had occasional front spring failure and I believe it's covered under a campaign like recall or TSB.

Might be worth verifying that and checking or replacing those springs while it's apart.

Subaru springs often don't need replaced and show little difference if they are. That's not to say you won't notice a difference, just don't usually.

You can buy rallitek springs any dimension and spring rate you want to add an inch which the strut should allow.

KYB is the OEM manufacturer for Subaru struts.

So if you can find kybs. Use them

Definitely KYB struts..   https://www.kyb.com/catalog/

springs are a bit harder to find, depending on your year/model (which you don't state) but I was able to find stock springs for a 98 Forester (strut swap into a 95 Legacy) at an online dealer for a reasonable price.

kyb makes subaru's struts? did not know that...thanks

yes, but the OEM spec is a little softer, the KYB aftermarkets will feel about 15% stiffer - maybe more if your present struts are worn-out. If you do the fronts, I recommend new mounts up top, mine on my WRX were crunchy/dry feeling.

i replaced my struts months ago. front mounts, too. :)

funny you should mention AM kyb's being a bit stiffer. the rear end of my lego wagon has the droops and has been bottoming out too much on my road. as a temporary fix, until i can make my strut spacers (next week), i put in some lifters in the coil springs. made the rear end a good bit stiffer....and i'm finding i really like it that way. :D so, when i install my spacers, now i'm thinking i'll put the kyb's in.....since i already have them (see my first post in this thread for clarification)

I have Monroe struts on all 4 corners on my 98 obw. Also replaced with oem springs at the same time. 8 years later no issues.

I did Monroe's on one car - KYBs on the next one... I like the KYBs better. personal preference, I know, but the KYBs just rode better to me

Nice used set of KYB from the rust free CO yard. 30 each.  Sweet

Interesting, all said.... Yeah, cheers. for KYB.....

I have two VW Jettas... (diesel)....  I purchased them years and years apart..... both used  both MK2 series.

The first one I installed KYBs........   Second one..... like a year ago..... installed the Monroes.....

I much rather would have chosen the KYB's and  if it aggravates me enough I will put the KYBs in the second

car that has the Monroes.  The Monroes  were/are rather stiff   (it felt like I was crashing into every concrete expansion joint on the interstate)

So thanks!.... I will get KYB's, new mounts for the front and give the car a good look over(regarding how it sits) and go from there....

& I am thinking my springs will be fine.......

Thanks, Micky

Just pulled a full set of KYB's complete with springs and top hats off a 97 Legacy Outback.  $100,80 out the door at the yard.  I don't need them right now, but when I see them I grab them.
