May 17, 20187 yr 2005 OB auto Noticed past few weeks, only in reverse. Seems to be coming from mid car and not wheels. Universal joint? Are they serviceable on this model/year?
May 18, 20187 yr If it happens once per wheel rotation it's brakes or such. If it happens 4x per wheel rotation it's a u-joint. If it gets faster in rhythm much faster than you speed up, that is 4x wheel rotation, it's pretty noticeable.
May 19, 20187 yr Author if it is that center bearing (not the standard u-joint), has anyone tried tapping in a grease fitting? Is there room within the bearing housing for such a move? Edited May 20, 20187 yr by brus brother
May 21, 20187 yr If it is rythmic squeak like the video it's a U joint. Quite often they only make noise in reverse.

May 22, 20187 yr Huh, link and video is gone, trying again. well strange can't even link to a youtube video. On youtube search with quotes "silverado bad u-joints" Edited May 22, 20187 yr by CNY_Dave
May 24, 20187 yr Author yup cny that silverado ujoint sounds about right anyone every tap in a grease fitting for that center bearing i have been told by local shops that the drive shaft isn't serviceable...
May 24, 20187 yr A good local shop can modify the "non serviceable" U joint mounts. At least the local one here did with my older Loyale "non serviceable" driveshaft. The U joints on my 09 Forester look pretty much the same as the ones on the Loyale shaft, although I have not measured them.
May 24, 20187 yr It does appear you can replace the U joint. I only hear that sound in reverse as well
May 24, 20187 yr Yeah, you have to dremel out the “staking” to get the old ones out. I haven’t done it yet but that’s what I understand others have done. I’m going to try to use a hole saw without a pilot but, if I can find one just the right size. Mine are stiff after 500k. Tried drilling to get some grease in there, but the metal is just too hard.
May 24, 20187 yr The bearings are pretty destroyed by now, grease won't put the metal back. The needles get out of round, grooves get formed on the race surfaces.
