today i help a friend of mine pull an engine from a 2001 outback and put the engine from a 2000 outback in its place. we had to swap the intake manifolds due to differences in the throttle body and electronics. everything is together but it will not start. the engine cranks over but does not fire. engine ran in the other car before the swap what are we missing?

 

 the 2001 engine ran but had a bad head gasket and was driven on over heating for about 20 minutes and the 2000 engine that went in was running fine in the old car 2 motnhs ago when it drove 25 minutes to the house.

Just from reading old posts about this my guess is you have to swap the camshaft sprocket and/or that crankshaft sprocket/sensor. More knowledgeable members will pinpoint the problem/solution. 

As John said - you need the cam and crank gears from your original engine. They'll have different marks on them for the timing of spark and ignition.

Swap over and set the cam belt timing correctly should see it fire up. 

Another thing to check first is all of your plug connections ensuring the cam and crank angle sensors are properly connected (and sensors mounted properly).

2000-2001 manual transmission had a different cogged crank gear than the automatics, or other year sticks.  Most likely that is your problem.  Left (drivers) side Cam gear should be checked but I doubt that will need swapped.  

As Bennie said also double check your connections.

Left Cam and Crank Sprockets are a matched set.  

Small trigger teeth on the Crank had more triggers on the cam.

yep cam and crank sprockets were different swapped them over and it fired right up.

Awesome when it's an easy fix like that!
