Will 99 2.2 impreza L swap into a 2003 Forester?

Featured Replies

I found a cheap 2003 Forester with messed up motor. I have a rusted out 99 Impreza L 4 door, with good engine. Does anyone know if this is an easy transplant? Also the Forester has approx 204K miles on it. Would this be kinda high mileage for the trouble of the swap?

Hmmm. not sure why no one has responded...although this is covered elsewhere.

The Phase2 2.2 in your '99  should work if you swap the intake manifold from the Foz and the exhaust manifold from the Imp.

If the Foz is an Automatic use its flex-plate.

I'd also do the HG while it's out as that Phase 2 will likely have issues like the 2.5's.

Thank you! What is "oz"? and I understand about exhaust manifold, but why intake?

Foz = Fozzie = Forester...google.

Intake and it's wiring need to match the '03...so keep the '03.

You may also have to swap the Crankshaft gear and Drivers side Cam Gear from the Forester,  if they have different timing triggers

You might find the intake bolt pattern is different as they changed it somewhere around this time.

if that's the case, swapping the heads from your ej20 onto the ej22 can be done. It may result I higher compression or no change at all - but the intake will bolt on.

Cam wheel/gear swap will definitely be required.

All the best.

Cheers

Bennie
