1982 wagon Fuel tank fitment

Featured Replies

Greetings,

My son is fixing up a 1982 GL 4WD wagon, and is in need of a new/different gas tank. It sat for years and the tank is all rusted, twisted off several sending unit bolts and it even had a mouse nest inside.

I can find new tanks online but only for 1985 and newer. Anybody know if they will fit? The Spectra Premium SU1A looks like the right tank except the sender is on top instead of on the rear.

Thanks for any insight!

I also have numerous parts to trade if someone has a useable tank.

Maybe contact supplier . Aftermarket fuel tanks...what next !

Make sure it's not an L series unit.

What you want is one from a brumby/BRAT/MV as these will bolt in and have the sender unit on the rear of the tank.

You might find a forum member here that has one available ;)

Cheers

85+ is most likely an EA82 tank, which is not quite right.

AFAIK, there are no new EA81 tanks available, you'll have to find a good used, which is tough as most junkyards drill a hole in them to drain them. Brat/Wagon are interchangeable for sure, probably sedan and coupe as well, hatchback tank is physically smaller, can be used with a plate behind it to adapt to the mounts for the larger tank (my brat has a hatch tank in it)

Okay, so do you think I could make an EA82 tank work in an EA81 car? As long as it's a wagon tank and I'm putting it in a wagon?

Anything's possible, and I've never even remotely compared them (I've never even had an EA82 tank out of a car...).

But they're pretty different platforms. At the very least, it's not going to be a direct swap.

I think you'll really struggle as the MY tank is very rectangular in it's shape and the L's tank is an odd shape that I think is wider.

One way to find out if you're cashed up and keen.

Cheers

Bennie
