d8usti5n Posted October 2, 2018 Share Posted October 2, 2018 I currently have a 5mt d/r in my lifted 84 brat, and reverse keeps popping out. upon inspection I see what looks like shavings in my gear oil. does anybody have experience taking these apart and rebuilding? is it straight forward? or is it just as well to go pull a replacement from a junkyard? I wouldn't suggest starting out with a dual range for your first Subaru transmission. There's a lot going on in the linkage department for the 4WD and the Hi/Lo. But on the other hand they aren't easy to find in good used condition either so you might want to seek out some professional assistance in doing a rebuild while the parts can still be sourced from Subaru. Crazyeights Posted October 3, 2018 Share Posted October 3, 2018 (edited) I have had two of them apart. One was the standard 1988 EA82 D/R and the other was a 1987 RX D/R with Full time 4WD and center diff lock. Both of them got bearings and all the seals, the D/R got 1st and 2nd gear synchros too. Just go slow and follow the factory service manual procedures to a "T". There used to be some really good right-ups on here with pictures. Putting the tail section back on and lining up the internal linkage takes some patience as does setting the backlash properly. I have lots of good pictures of mine apart if you need them.
