Advice on buying an outback

Featured Replies

Going to look at a 2000 Subaru Outback 82000 miles, I know a decent amount about older subarus.  But every model is a little different so any thing I should look for?

Weeping HGs externally - coolant and oil.

Usual subaru things - vibrations, weird noises...

Check suspension bushes, although at 80,000 miles they should still be good for a long time unless it spent all it’s life on a dirt road.

Cheers

Bennie

Check for rust and rot in the usual places.

Mostly on the rear quarter panels and also get a close look at the underside and inspect the rear sub frame! They have been known to rust out to the point where the car is not repairable.

headgaskets.
interference engine - needs to have new Subaru timing belt and pulleys.  but those are easy to do so not a big deal.

everything else is easy or standard general maintenance items - rust, boots, fluids.
