Front axle disassembly

Featured Replies

Hi,all, Went to replace a failed inner front boot on my (6 month old) reman axle (84 2wd DL wagon) and after getting the axle out I realized I don't know how to further disassemble the CV joints and can't see any obvious snap rings or other retainers in the murk of the old grease. Haynes is no help here, either. Anyone got a reference diagram or other info? Gotta get it rolling tomorrow, the rest of the fleet is in long(er) term storage awaiting $$$. Thanks to all, Paul

Shawn, thanks. No details on the retainer(s) location at this site. Anyone else ??

Heres a site I refer to sometimes.

I havent actually rebooted an axle before. I always seem to have used ones around or the one that I need to replace is a lifetime warranty axle.

if you bend it at an extreme angle, see of you can dig a ball out. you may need to get it in its magic spot, it may have only one position to come apart.

i myself never took one apart, but i know a guy(tomrhere) that has had them apart. may destroy something, be careful. once you get one ball out the rest is easy

They actually come apart very easy once you see the instructions in just about any haynes or other manual.

Thanks to all of you. General Disorder, your tech article should be required reading for anyone who wants to work on CV axles!! Makes it look like a piece of cake. Cheers

No problem guys - look for more pages of this quality in the near future. Mostly geared towards the EA81 off-roading crowd, but I'm sure a lot of it will be applicable in a generic way. Check out our pictures and video's too:

GD

that was a nice write up GD. i wish the tech stuff i NEED was writen that clearly.

I second that. This level of clarity is rare. I hope GD will author and illustrate a similarly clear presentation on electrical troubleshooting with a multimeter someday.
