Engine identification

Featured Replies

I recently bought an 02 Outback only to learn there had been an engine swap and I have no idea what it is out of so I can't buy replacement parts. I am in dire need of a pcv valve. It has been hooked up wrong and I don't know for how long. The crank has had no ventilation and I don't need oil leaks developing. (Someone looped it into itself instead of to the intake)

Is there any way to find out?

PVC valves are all the same.

Engine designation is just under the alternator a little toward the power steering pump. It’ll be EJ20/EJ22/EJ25.

If it's a USDM engine, the VIN of it's donor vehicle will be down on the RH side of the block, right next to the flange for the transmission bellhousing. There's a flat spot there, and it's stamped in there. It's very difficult to see with the engine in the car, but I have been able to sneak a phone down in there and take a picture of it.

Otherwise, as Bennie said, under the alternator will be the basic engine code, which just tells you the displacement. But that's a start.

No they are not. Some are threaded and some were a press fit into the manifold.

Take a picture and go to the auto parts store.

Not hard to match.

I’ve never seen a press fitted one. How do you replace those??

On the Outbacks , MY 2000 and 2001 have the PCV valve threaded into the intake manifold, with hoses connecting to the block, air box (sometimes) and the valve. The hose connection at the valve is approx 3/4 inch?.Starting with MY 2002 the PCV valve is threaded into the fitting located on the block and a single hose connects to the intake manifold, the hose is smaller, maybe 3/8 inch?. The valves are not the same. There was a mid year change and I have seen a couple of 01's with the later style. When doing engine swaps if you have a newer intake manifold and an older block or the opposite, the plumbing and or hoses or even the location of the valve may have been modified to make it work.

In the attached picture shows the attach point on the block the non threaded is the older style, the threaded is the newer style
