Cheap mods for RX

Featured Replies

I know this has sort of been covered before, But I would like to get some more information on some cheap mods I could do with the '87 RX That I hoping to get. Mods including performance/appearance welcome.

(cheap means <~$100)

ok many can expect this from me :) i think

but megasquirt do it yerself programmable fuel injection roughky 150 ish when its all done

distributor less ignition system same as i run combined with the megasquirt

for the junkyard parts is an exra 35-45 from a junk yard for the extra parts

intercooling ect

anyways my useless.000000002 cents

I got some BIG intercoolers if you wanna blow $100 :brow:

maf adapter & cone filter-$30?

WRX intercooler-$80?

cat delete/lager exhaust from a shop-$80?

boost controller-$15-50?

hmmmmm that intercooler sounds nice. How hard are they to install?

The manual boost controller is even cooler. You can up the boost from stock to about 10psi i believe. And that will give you the most noticable difference of all. The intercooler will then help with increased boost, and to compliment it's always nice to have a good exhaust.

What all is involved with setting up an intercooler? (How do you do it?)

remove the pipe that leads from your turbo to your intake, and put an intercooler in between. You will need custom pipe to go from the turbo to the I/C, and pipe leading from the I/C to your intake.

RX7 Top mount IC ~$20 on ebay

RX7 Recirculation valve - ~$5 on ebay

hoses and piping - From the RX7 and Dodgesubishi Starquest - $?

Manual Boost controller - ~$25 on ebay -~$10 DIY

Cone filter - $25 Autozone

Aluminum MAF adapter - $15.99 autozone

Various little crap to make it all work - ~$20

Theres a thread from within the past 24 hours that documents one users luch getting a cone filter and adapter off ebay for atoud $20 The filter sounds to be better quality than mine and the adapter is plastic.

Hood scoop- $30 on ebay (unpainted)

Only fabrication that had to be done was welding a small tube onto one of the IC pipes for the Recirc valve. Also had to drill out the end of the little pastic silencer on the MAF hose to plumb the recirc valve.

Also, effective hood scoop usage requires cutting a hole in the hood.

mine looks like this

All prices listed are estimates .. YMMV.. being the cheapskate that I am you can damn well bet I didn't pay that much

How a about that mnual boost control? what is it like? How do you install it? is it engine/turbo specific? Is it better to get that or an intercooler 1st?

Its probably better to get an IC first, but I actually did the boost controller about 2 weeks before the IC.. with the IC you can run more boost.

Boost controoler takes about 10 minutes to install.. its not car specific

One important thing that I forgot to put on the list above.. boost gauge!!

One thing I cannot stress enough. If you are going to mod you motor, get it in tip top stock condition first.

maybe i am paranoid and depend on electronics to much

but do you really want to trust your boost to sumthing as simple and the spring in a pen? eventually it could corrod and sieze up i doubt it but... it could happen

it could jam up from contamination oil ect that subie's are known for leaking

stuff like that

they work fine and all from what i see

but eh i am paranoid on somethings :)

and i told u if you think your big enough then you can try and cage me :)

now me in a cage is amusing but does not help this fellow with his questions

maybe i am paranoid and depend on electronics to much

but do you really want to trust your boost to sumthing as simple and the spring in a pen?

thats only if you MBC is the ball spring type. mines not:brow:

thats only if you MBC is the ball spring type. mines not:brow:

I'm assuming you are using a granger valve then?

Having used both, I like my ball and spring type better.. Just based on my experience

anybody want to build me one? (a boost contorler)

would it be better to go with a WRX intercooler or some other? I saw tons of variety on ebay.

  • Author

the WRX one was ~ $20, saw others a bout for that too, about that price range would be nice.

AEIOU- if your buying a used wrx IC off the net make sure it has:

both cast elbows

y-pipe

Yup, definately have to get the engine running better first. Doesn't idle too well, dies. Will probably need at least a tune up, altough I'm wondering if fuel system cleaner would help, because I guess it was sitting for a while, so it may just need to be cleaned out a bit. I definately like the sound of it though :brow: . Very Mean and agresive, although that might be because of a bad exaughst. I'm not sure. Its definately a car to work on.
