True Flow VS. K&N

I've been noticing these "true flow" air filters that seem similar to a K&N filter, but they are foam. Has anyone used these? HOw do they compare to a K&N? I have been using a K&N filter in my grand am for a while and am wondering what I should get for the RX I am hoping to get. Any other brand sugestions? I am currently leaning towards the K&N.

ive been hearing that KN filters do not filter well at all...and that the stock paper ones are just as good. Then again...foam sucks....or rocks. same with KN. Or...paper sucks and blows? Or does it rock in a wrx up to 400HP....ehhh??????????

 

Ive had a stock paper, KN, Foam (ricer special!), and the off brand similar to KN ricer cone filter. I dont know what I like best. I know that the foamy one i have fits best in my situation and seems to work great.

 

i know that in an RX and DL ive had...i had STOCK intakes on them and they were perfelty great driving cars with a cheap rump roast NAPA silver paper...30 mpgs or better. Still again...my dad has KN in his GTi and loves it. others hate it.

 

Mehh....i dont know. i try all. once i have enough time and money to sink into it...I will get dyno time and track time and see what the results are from the different setups.

First off, I have heard that K&N is not the greatest at filtering those single digit micron particles of dirt. Which is why I believe K&N is probably best suited for high HP (WRX, STi, V8's, etc.). My 240hp modded 92 SHO has been Dyno'd with/without a K&N and it added 2 hp/2 lbs torque. Therefore, what will it do for a classic Subaru airbox ? 1hp ? At the cost of slightly less filtration ? I'll get a "regular" air filter.

 

I have recently tried a few things to the air intake and I will describe here. All can draw their own conclusions. I took off the stock airbox and bought a ricer adapter plate to get ready for a cold air induction. Friend comes over, I'm on vacation, we get hammered (Wisconsin), and I forget about NOT having ANY filtration on the MAF. Drive the car the next day and I remark about the "awsome throttle response" and "wow, the turbo really winds up nice !". However, I did notice it ran really rough/low on idle, about 200 rpm less. I checked it out later and saw my little mistake. Put the stock airbox back on and it runs just like original. I'll have to see what happens when I get the custom K&N hooked up.

Don't waste your time or your money Will. Do a dyno only if you are using a cone style filter, especially a cone style filter with custom piping. Testing a K&N panel filter vs the stock filter seems pointless. What's good about the K&N cone filter is not only that it's letting in more air but it has more surface area to suck in air vs the stock rectangular filters. I'm sure if there was a cone filter using the stock filter paper element, it'd perform pretty good as well, and would probably sell well if it was cheap.
