There's an 87 GL Wagon available, 165000 miles for $1000. The ball joint needs to be replaced and there's some rust on the rear passenger panel. Other than that, it runs well. Should I do it? I really want an old subaru. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Without seeing it I'd say it might be a little steep?

 

Seems as though they can be had in good shape for a little less in my neck of the woods.

 

I'd look for a bit and see what else pops up.

I'm thinking $1000 is a little much to pay for something with under 100 hp and over 150000 miles. Sounds like a decent car, but get the price a little more reasonable.

 

and if the seller says "its only ball joints" then it probably needs something else, because, unless he's super-short on money, why wouldn't he replace them and get more money for his car?

$1000 us or canadian cuz last time i was in canada the exchange rate was like $.50 on the dollor which would make the car around $500 which isn't to bad

but i don't know what the exchange rate is right now

it is high, i am looking at a gl d/r 87 carb ,231,000mi for alot cheaper than that , some rust

Seriously, if its really just ball joints, offer him $600C and call it good.

I paid $1,000 US for my '87 GL10. It is a Turbo and a 4x4 so I thought it was OK. Not the best but not too bad either.

The guy wants $1800 Canadian ($1467.92 US)for it and it has 264000 km (165000 miles). I'm not willing to pay that much money for it but I just wanted a ball park for what I should try to talk him down to. I was thinking of offering $1100 C (897.89 US). He's selling the car for a roommate that skipped town. Oh, and I wanted to say thanks very much for all of the responses so far. You've helped more than you know.

Everybody likes to get things as cheaply as possible, but a cheap car is not necessarily a "bargain".

In my mind, the condition of the unibody is everything with these cars. You cannot possibly repair the body for the same money it takes to buy a better car. You'd spend $10 (or more) in bodywork for every dollar you save. Think about this if your intent is to "fix up" an old Sube.

If the rust is truly minor, and we are talking $1000 in Canadian dollars, it might be a decent buy.

However, if it's a typical 87 with 150k, rust, and in need of front-end work, I wouldn't get too excited about it. Try to find a better one, and you should be able to, if you're willing to spend $1000 (US dollars).

Actually, the Canadian Dollar hit a high last week, topped 80cents to the US Dollar.

 

I sold one with 235k once for 1700. Car was solid as hell, the guy was glad to pay it.

Are there others around you could get for less? If not, grab it up.
