Trans / (differential?) Bearing help needed

Featured Replies

Is it possible to pull that right bearing without taking the tranny out? I have an 86 Gl wagon 5 spd, 4wd.,and the bearing inside the round cover is shot...is there a special tool for pulling it? I have the axle out and cover off...

I appreciate any help you could give me...

thanks,

Paul

if you are talking bout the outboard bearing, that's easy. surrounding the output shaft/stub is a retainer which holds the seal. the retainer has spokes/fins radiating from the center. there is a bolt which keeps this retainer from turning, remove the bolt and the retainer will unscrew and slide off of the stub. your bearing will now be able to be removed.

jeez talk about luck out of the blue i decided to check how easy it was to do on my spare 4spd tranny and now not 3 hours later i am reading a post asking about it. A cold chissle and a rubber mallet worked fine for me but be carefull if you want to reuse the retainer. Inside there is a slightly conical pipe inside that gets crammed arround the bearing. Just buy wiggleing the axle stub this thing fell right out, it only goes in one way but its pretty obvious. It only took me about 15 minutes total to open look the close and this was in a pretty confined space in my parts pile so doing with your tranny in should be a breeze.

I have this cover off, and the race out. I tried to pull the bearing out but the cage and rollers busted lose and now I just have the sleeve on the stub. I have been told now that this is bearing is pressed on and needs to be pulled and new one installed by a press...do you think I can chisel off the sleeve and press one on while its in the car? It would save lots of hassle, but I don't want to wreck the stub or the tranny....

the remaining part should be on the shaft snug but should come out with some kind of a hook. I know you can do it just keep pluging away, cussin at it always helps me.

Tyler J.

I paid $22 at PEP Boys for the bearing

I may have the same bearing that's shot, but before I start tearing apart my tranny, I have a couple of questions:

What makes you think it's that bearing..any tranny noises or vibrations in the steering wheel?

Did the steering wheel shake?

Does the noise clear up after driving awhile?

I was looking in the FSM, and it seems like a pretty straightforward job, as described above.

I had the cover off to change the seal cuase it was leaking, and I have excessive play in the shaft the bearing is defiantely worn....

Does the FSM say you can replace the bearing without removing and opening the transmission?

Does anyone know how much to re-tighten the retainer? Is there a preload spec etc.? It has to matter, to prevent premature bearing/gear wear.

Thankyou,

Keith

I tightened it up until it was left with just a little movement, as the bearing warmed up the slack went away. these are tapered bearings, some of you may only need to tighten the retainer and not replace the bearing.

keith,

unfortunately i don't know the answer, but you are wise to find out. i know for the XT6 AWD auto (4EAT) transmission, messing with that retainer is critical.

only thing i've been told that is if you're just removing it and reinstalling it, to mark the retainer and housing and count how many turns it takes to come off. then install it the same way it was. as for new bearings i don't know. in my case it wasn't necessary so i didn't end up doing it.
