February 10, 200521 yr I am thinking about buying a Legacy, and the guy says the only thing wrong with it is that it needs a new crank sensor. Does anyone know what a Crank Sensor is and how much it might cost to have replaced. Even if I have to buy one from a dealership? Thanks, Gabe
February 11, 200521 yr If the crank sensor is faulty, the "Check Engine" light should be on. If that's not the case, then the seller is hiding something - or doesn't know enough about the car.
February 11, 200521 yr sounds a little fishy to me, the CEL would be on if the crank angle sensor was bad. ~Josh~
February 11, 200521 yr If it is indeed the Crank sensor....Retail dealer cost is around 32.00 I get mine a bit cheaper , Cause My dealer Loves me...... aftermarket you should be able to get one for around 25.00 I'd think.... But I prefer dealer parts when I can...... John

February 17, 200521 yr Somewhere between 90-94 or 95, the crank sensor changed. They are probably functionally identical, the difference is the later one has the connector on the sensor body, the earlier one having a 10" or so lead. I paid $200 for the early sensor on http://www.1stsubaruparts.com, and saw later sensors for a ridiculous fraction of that.
February 17, 200521 yr Find out (test) to see if there are any codes saved. BTW, $215-$350 for a '91 crank position sensor is the best I see. Too expensive to try before you buy.
February 25, 200521 yr Author All the Crank Sensors from the Colorado Dealerships are about $380. I did find out that it is the smae part numver for all 90-94 Legacy's. Not sure about the Turbo. But I have one of my 90 that I can put in. I did buy the car and need to get it from New York to Wyoming. So I am going to send out a Crank Sensor and have it put in. The guy I bought the Car from said the Car wont start. He said there is not power to the Coil or something like that? I am not sure exactly what he said becasue it was over the phone and I was at work. Does anyone know if a Bad Crank Sensor would keep the Car from Starting? Thanks
February 27, 200521 yr I went to the local "pick and pull" to find myself a crank sensor for my 92 Legacy after finding out the new OEM sensors were expensive ($250+). I pulled an extra one, which I tested and works. If anyone wants it (from a '94 Legacy), e-mail me. kmix99@yahoo.com
February 28, 200521 yr Mudrat is right about them being around $25 from the dealer. I've been getting codes for my crank angle sensor and been having starting problems when cold. Replaced the crank angle sensor and camshaft sensor. Mudrat ordered them from the dealer and each sensor was around $25 each. My starting problems went away for a couple of weeks and are now coming back. We can't figure out the problem. I still get codes for the crank sensor and have starting problems. I checked the ohms on the connections to the crank sensor as well as the crank sensor and all the ohms readings fall within specs. This guy selling the 94 Legacy may be having the same problems as me and has decided to pass the problem off to someone else.

The 25 Dollar Sensors people keep mentioning must be for Crank Sensors that were put on Later Model Distributorless Ignition Systems. So in a sense Mudrat is right, but if we are talking about Legacies from 90-94, I still have not found one for under $300. Dealership or otherwise. Thanks, Gabe
