I figured it was a fuse.

Featured Replies

So when I bought this 85 GL Wagon I was told the heater didn't work. I figured it was just a fuse. The seller was not mechanically inclined at all. No sweat I thought.

Well if it's a fuse, I can't find it. No fan, no nothing. What am I missing?

If it is not a fuse, then the blower motor is shot or unplugged - look above the kickpanel on the passenger side - it is not hard to get to at all

Fan resistor pack. They burn out a lot.

I should have thought of that .... where is it located anyway in case mine blows?

i had one that a mouse built a nest and when it spun the mouse musta got wedged in there and stalled it cause the next week when i finally got it aprt there he was toasted

yeah - we had a similar prob. with a mouse building nest in the evap. core - I may be wrong - but I think there is a TSB on mice making nests in the HVAC system

The blower resistor is located under the passenger dash, next to the fan. It is installed with 2 screws.(which are not a problem to remove, but tricky to put back in) and has a wire connector, also one bolt is common to the fan itself. Part number for a 86 wagon, which should be the same, for a 85, is:

I have a doner car. Just have to figure out what to done. Donner. Doan. Doaner nner. AAARGH Doaner? How the heck do ya spell that?

Any how, thanks. Tomarro's another day. Another dirty shirt.

If the resistor pack dies, you should still have the highest speed, as it doesn't run through a resistor like the other speeds do. My vote is for mouse and/or dead fan.. Easy fix.

donor. you can hotwire the green wire on the fan to get it to work, the speed settings will work also. but fan blows out the vents in the off position

Thats interesting. I let y'all know what I find. Thanks

I would check to see if you have voltage at the blower motor. If there's no voltage and your fuses are fine (there 3 for the blower, #1, #2, and something else), it's probably the relay. The relay is located up under the steering wheel, next to the other relays (4 total). I don't remember the wire colors, I just know it's not the black ones. I've had two of these buggers go out on me in the last year. There's a good writeup about blower motor problems in the USRM.

I'd jump power to the red and green wires at the clip (blower) and see if you have a good blower motor?

I just now finally went after the heater problem. All you guys really help me know where to start and what to expect. Here is what I found.

Blower motor is dead. Does nothing with known power source. Replaced with one from donor car. (works)

Coils in resistor pack were multi broken, crumbly. Replace with from same car.

Heater works great now! Thanks guys!!

Pyro,

All thats left is headlights. One worked when I started the resurection. Now none. Tested a plug today, no juice. Will look at fuses tomarrow. I'll post a seperate thread if I get stuck.

had the mouse prob with mine 2 had a nest in the evap core and the fan motor, still dead somewheres in the center section of the heater so i can't even get to the thing i hate smelling cooking dead mouse lol
