Hi folks,

I'm having a very confusing problem and am hoping someone here can help. My 96 legacy outback 2.5 has not wanted to start for the last few days and I eventually drained the battery attemting to start it. I put the battery charger on and it started to make this weird clicking noise inside the car. I paid no attention and let it charge. 2 hrs. later I go out and..bang..it fires right up. Now I'm confused as to why it wouldn't start before and even more confused because that damn ticking noise inside the car won't stop !! Whether this is related or not I don't know, but when I turn the car off, it shows both front doors ajar on the dash.

Is there an alarm or a security shut off for the ignition?

just the basic keyless entry as far as i know brus.

My car has been sitting in the driveway for about 2 hrs now and the clicking noise is still there. Maybe the thing will blow up.... . It is obviously getting juice from the battery to SOMETHING....BUT WHAT !!!!! :-\ Its almost like a turn signal click...but a slower sequence.

The worst has happened. My wife went out to investigate the clicking noise and promptly fixed it. There is a little @#$%^&*ing plunger up under there somewhere...she pushed it in...no more clicking ! My life is over...bye all

just take your fob and hold the unlock button for about 5 sec that should reset the system...

o.k.....upon further review I have found the origin of the noise...on I have no idea what it is :-\ . It is coming from a black box down by the fuse box. If you look direcly left from the break pedal, there is a black box with 2 plastic ties around it...this is where the clicking is comimg from. Would somebody please tell me what !@#$%^& this thing is.

I believe that plunger is part of the security system I asked you about earlier. The fob is the key fob (keyless entry doowidget), also related to the alarm system. It is the remote sender you should have gotten with the car.

Don't worry, your "life is over" is a misstatement. Better said, your Hell has just begun.

fob:

a watch or ornament worn on the end of a chain or ribbon attached to clothing

an ornament attached to a key ring

"Your wife fixed your car. Ha, ha," said Nelson. (Glad it was an easy fix.)

Thanks guys....learned what a fob is today !! 1 more question....can this keep a car from starting, acting as a kill switch ? Still trying to figure why the car wouldn't start.

I suspect that what happened was that you battery drained low enough to turn off the alarm system, as if you disconnected the battery. When power comes back, like reconnecting the battery, the alarm is armed automatically, and must be reset with the little plunger switch under the dash. Hold it about 15 seconds WITH THE KEY IN ON POSITION and the door locks cycle, then the alarm is reset and the ignition then works.

The dead battery is a sign that you have a bad connection or that you may need an alternator. The fact that it started right up with sufficient charge indicates a very weak battery, which points to poor charging. Check all your primary connections.

Previous to the car restarting yesterday, I had the battery checked and it's connections. The test results were that the battery was fine and the connections were tight. At times it would fire right up..other times it would just crank..crank..crank. The battery ran dead thru over cranking and draining it. Thats why I am so confused..at times it fires right up..others..crank.crank. And when it does fire up..it runs like a charm.

Hell, I worked on an airplane today that wouldn't jettison its Chaff and Flare load in Bypass mode. After checking for proper voltages, we ended up disconnecting/reconnecting the same wires on a terminal board and it works now.

We avionics folks refer to it as FM - Frikkin' Magic
