1983 subaru GL Wagon. 1.8L 4x4 are all the 83 GL's dual range ? does the single range suck ??

If it is a 4 speed manual transmission it should be Dual Range. If it is an automatic then it is a single range. They used Single Range 4speeds on alot of DL and 1600cc models. With the 1.8 chances are it has a Dual Range tranny.

 

Single range doesnt suck. But Dual Range is alot better.

So these things are pretty strong, never had a suby before. Are the motors/trannys pretty tough, will it take a little abuse, I plane on some snow/sand. What are the things i should look for when shopping for one ? :wave:

as long as the radiator is good and you change the oil it will live forever:banana:

dual range is cool to have, if you are going to off road it. they love abuse.

Cool I just thought that sombody whould know for Sure if that particual car whould ONLY have dual range ...

my 83 gl wagon was a 2wd 5spd. but now it has a 4wd rear end, and a 5spd 4wd form a later body style. so no mater what you got you can make any ol' subaru a 4wd if you want to get that into it!

Sounds like things are pretty interchangeable . So it chould have a single range it depends on how they ordered it ?

Did they put a newer style d/r tranny in any newer style subes??

I'd like to do a motor swap from a legacy2.2 but I dont want to give up D/R versatility.

That '83 GL is almost certain to have a Dual Range 4speed. If its 4WD and its a Manual, its a dual range.

 

They will take almost anything. Just look around at some of our Subaru's and what we put them through. I have a '84 GL which is the same body style, has the same engine but I lifted it 3" and use it as my primary off-road rig. Some of us here have done even more to them.

LIFTED ? Who makes a lift kit for these ?

BYB makes lift kits for ea81, ea82, and a few of the newer models (I think). They cost around $300-$400.

Uh oh.. Now he knows they have dual range.. he's seen the lift.. $5 says he'll be asking about 14 or 15 inch wheels next:grin:

What's the stock tire size, and what fits ?

Stock rim size is 13" rim, stock tires are around 175/70R13.

 

The bolt pattern our cars have do not match any other bolt pattern for any other 14" or 15" rim other than Peugeot. You will hear alot about them on this board.

 

Without a lift, you can run 14" peugeot rims and up to 26" tires, and thats after alittle sledge work and alittle fender triming.

According to the brochures, all GL's are D/R if manual. No D/R's were offered as a DL model.
