RX mods

Featured Replies

I made some mods to my RX and it runs great now. I was discouraged with the lack of low end and general lack of power so I did the following:

Subspeed downpipe and 2.5 exhaust

RC Engineering cleaned/balanced injectors

new O2 sensor

new PVC valve

new cap/rotor/plugs

high flow air filter

removed intake muffler

MBC

I expected to be disapointed, that there would be no perceptable difference BUT much to my surprize, the cars is unbelievable now. Pulls very hard now through most of the RPM range in every gear, a real EA82 monster now!!!

I also made some suspension mods:

20mm rear sway bar

super pro bushings

GR-2 struts

white line rack bushings

the handling is AWESOME! much like the go-cart I had when I was a kid.

And some interior mods:

new speakers

boost gauge

stripped everything but the front seats, door panels, dash

And some exterior mods:

removed the body kit and added mud flaps

modified the grille

I'm going to finish the rear Saturday, bushings, struts and springs.

I had a cylinder that was not firing (loose injector plug) which led to a leakdown test check, a different cylinder is leaking into the coolant, I've supected it for some time, it has been running ok but I don't know how long that will last...so, I have another low mileage engine and a rebuilt set of gen III heads, I'm going to spend some time matching the ports where the intake and heads come together and slap it in with a XT-6 clutch.

Mark, PM Will since he has a hookup on a stage 2 clutch setup for 165 bucks. Much better then an XT6 clutch IMO. I'm just waiting to get money on Thursday to order mine:D

If he's still going to enter rallys in the future, he needs to keep the stock header.

oh right I forgot about that, whats up with that rear ebrake tho?

and how much did that RC engineering stuff cost? I've been thinking of getting a set done

$106 dollars for me, not counting shipping.

Speaking of RC Engineering, what did your injectors flow at on an average before and after cleaning?

why?

Yep=PGT

stock header still?

xt6 rack? you swapped in the electric power steering?

xt6 rack=yes

electric=no

I used the stock RX pump and it works fine. Noticably quicker the the RX rack, bolted right on, RX tie rods.

I hope the XT-6 clutch works ok, I already have it.

The rear ebrake is a safety upgrade.

It was $115 w/shipping, quick turnaround.

I'll try to find my info sheet.

I can't find my slip, I'm sure it will turn up. I think they were around 225 dirty (guessing), and all were 240-242 cleaned (remember for sure).

I used an Impreza brake handle spaced off the floor an inch or so with Impreza cables run straight back through the bulk head under the back seat, I had to widen the console just a bit, it looks like it could be stock. I used Nissan 200SX 4 cylinder rear calipers with the subaru carriers and pads, the cable holder had to be ground down a bit to clear the axle and I drilled the hole out to accept the Impreza cable, I used a soob brake line clip to hold it. It is a very clean, almost straight bolt on installation, the only fab work was new holes for the brake handle, trimming the console, holes for the cables through the bulk head and the grinding and drilling on the cable mount. The cables exit the bulkhead and run right down the control arms, everything worked out very nice.

how'd you do the rear Ebrake?

Please let everyone know how the Ebrake works when used in a Rally type situation, i.e. Pendulum swing.

I want to know how the transmission will hold up to having two drive wheels stopped at once. In anger.

What's the math on the XT6 rack as compared to the RX rack? Now that mod is one I'd like to do. My factory pump can't keep up with the rack that's in the car now, It would probably just outright die if I put a quicker rack in it.

Nice list of modifications you have there.

The only downside to the XT6 pressure plate I can see is not being able to get full use out of the material on it because you can't get the full adjustment out of the cable when it gets worn. I'm working on a solution now.

can you get pics of the setup? just inside the car is all I'm concerned with

3.7 turns (non-XT/XT6) lock to lock as compared to 3.5 (XT, XT6)turns lock to lock.

I haven't used the rear e-brake yet but every once in while they throw a very sharp corner in when the track is really muddy, I can hardly even idle around these so I usually run them with the diff unlocked. I don't think it will hurt the trans a couple times a year, I'm not a big e-brake nut and they are usually at very low speed. Maybe not even fast enough to use the e-brake?

I posted the math awhile ago, it is about 12% quicker. My pump wouldn't keep up with the stock rack either, I'm anxious to see what happens now.

I have a XT-6 flywheel too, I doubt I will ever be near the end of the adjustment, I will have a new clutch or a new car before them...lol.

Thanks for the compliment, the car was really running and handling awesome and should be better now with bushings and struts, I haven't tested much yet. I did put accord springs on the back yesterday and they are way too stiff, the GR-2's don't have enough dampening and the rump roast end of the car is way up in the air even with the top strut mount flipped. I'm going to put the RX springs back in.

Question: I cut the RX springs to lower the car. Would the cut RX springs (shorter) or an uncut pair of RX springs (more compressed) be stiffer???

Actually the XT-6 rack is 3.25 turns but it still isn't as much as it would seem because the GL rack covers more distance. I acurately measured the distance traveled with the same number of turns.

Yes, I can get some pics but it might be a day or two, don't be afraid to remind me :-) I want to try to get pics of the whole set up. BTW...the cables I use came of an Imprezza with disc brakes, they have a little different cable end and it fits the 200SX cable mount better.
