oil temp

Featured Replies

I want to install an oil temp gauge on my RX, where can I put the sender? can I use one of the plugs in the oil pump or does it have too be sumerged in oil?

if it was me I would locate it in the stump near the strainer - tells me the temp of the oil right before it goes through the pump - just make sure you don't impair the flow of oil through the strainer

that looks easy enough, but what was teh other way skip?

I have done it two ways

My first method was to drill and tap

the oil pan drain plug

Well it probably wouldn't interest you.

I now have a lab digital Fluke in my dash array.

It uses thermocouples (TC).

These are just TC wire with the end

welded together forming the TC junction.

So I simply run it down the dip stick hole.

It locks in place with the dip stick.

why wouldn't that interest me? you saying something bout me, skip?

that sounds neat, and kinda what I want, but it also seems a bit expensive. so I guess I'm drilling the drain plug

JW, chill brother, you said gauge

gauges have sender units not thermocouples

Sounded like you had your mind set on a gauge

simple as that.

You're welcome for the idea, drawing and the picture.

Frank, temps range around 20 degrees higher than the

coolant (~210 - 220 deg F) (I also have a TC in the thermostat housing)

Summer high boost runs up large hills can elevate it to the 240 range.

I do not have an oil cooler.

I was just joking with that, figured it would have been implied so I left out the "smily"

*hands out this months dose of Midol to both JWX and Skip*

:rolleyes::lol:

Pics? :brow:

JW, Snow worries mate

Raven make mine prozac please

here is Willy's cockpit, red display almost centered is the

lab digital readout

Bond, James "Skip" Bond. LOL

Ive been wondering if the Skip'ster was going to post oil temps....those sound about right for what I was thinking these engines make.

I imagine in my case, autocrossing on hot days....mine gets up to 280 maybe.

'Tis time for an oil cooler setup for sure.....

I think that I willbe tapping the oil pan with a guage sender, a digital one from Summit....and along with that, a digital water temp guage as well.

That reminds me...oil pressure guage too.

damn, i need a real wideband and A/F 'tuner' for the car as well.

tats what I was thinking, but I'm prolly going to drill and tap the drain plug for it.

I see...

get over to Top Speed tomorrow and get yer clutch and junk manq. :-p

Ummm just outa curiosity, would I have to take the oil pan out to put a new hole in for the sender? Or, could I just use the existing drainplug hole and use an adaptor? I've got an electric temp guage by SunPro with the metric adaptors. Would that work?

Ted,

My thinking on the matter, lame as it may be,

was that I didn't want to

remove the oil pan

or

risk chips getting sucked up by the oil pump

Now, it has a mesh screen filter but.....

That is why I removed the drain plug

and

did all the work on the bench.

I used a drill press and vise for the hole.

You would have to get a metric tap

if that is the what the thread pitch is on your sender.

Mine was NPT, for oil changes, I have a quick disconnect plug on it's wire

(as you can see).

I didn't want the plug extending out too far, with the adapter you have it may

(if the adapter is the same size as the drain plug hole?

your method may work.)

Skip, what kinds of readings are you getting? My car has an oil cooler, but on the freeway at a 60mph-ish cruise, my oil temperature is about 225 degrees F. My sensor is mounted in my oil drain plug as well. Wondering if your readings are any different.

damn skip, that looks like star trek from the 80s

what is it that you have crammed in there? I can see the fluke meter, some gauges for temps and soforth, but what is the oscilloscoop like window? and what's up with the targeting visor besides it

I wonder where the button "fasers" is ;)

My temps are about the same as yours (see mention of them earlier in this thread)

Joost, thanks - I think you may be looking at the altimeter

Anyone else have an oil temp gauge?

bought one for the xt6 but haven't installed yet

Here's a few numbers I kinda remember when my brother and I went to WCSS7. Headin' through the Phenix area at about 65mph and about 110 outside, my water temp was running at 230 and my oil temp was at about 280. That's with the oil cooler. Engine didn't like that after about 200 miles. :(
