just wondering if a turbo in my brat would give it more performance with offroading. If so, what would it help with?

Rock crawling would be a little harder than w/ an NA engine (lower-end power) but when you're moving, a turbo is going to give you a lot of punch.

 

Kind of depends on what you want to be doing w/ the car off road. I would say in most cases, except for very very low-speed obstacles, the turbo will make you pretty happy.

 

A turbo will also make for pretty good highway travel.

Turbo cars lack the low end "grunt" thats usually most useful in offroading. As MSSLGECKO said.. it all depends on what you're wanting to do.

 

If you're in a rallycross mood, you'll enjoy the turbo.

 

If you're in a tactical rock crawing mood, you'll dislike the turbo.

 

If you're in a hillclimbing mood, you'll enjoy the turbo.

 

If you're on the road on your way to the pit, you'll enjoy the turbo.

 

Basically, anything that usually relies on high revvs, you'll enjoy the turbo.

If you have 4lo you will enjoy the turbo alot more.

I'd be worried about cold shocking the turbo on water crossings, even thought the turbo is mounted pretty high on the subies. other than that, it would be nice.

awe yes the infamous turbo-offroad question, if you want low end torque for getting out of sticky situations, go N/A, if you do lots of higher speed things, like rally, rallycross or stuff like that, use turbo. cold shocking is also something to think about as stated before, but usually, if you do most of your driving on city streets, might as well get turbo, for those that adventure offroad more often than most, use N/A. anytime your below 3k rpm's or whenever your turbo would spool up, your not seeing much positive manifold pressure(boost). so the low end grunt lost because of the lower compression ratio of the turbo motor is not beneficial enough to use turbo. that is my opinion, some my find different results, i say EJ22 it baby!!!!!!!!

yeah. I am really thinking about an EJ22.. I just have no money

So, for hard offroad no turbo. Well that answers my question. I do use my car as a daily (more like every so offten, when it comes out of the workshop) driver. But I want it good in real tricking places. And I don't have the money for a turbo (I could "get" it if I wanted a turbo enough)

Anyway. Thanks for the advice. I think I need a street car. I'll get a job then one of these http://www.saker.co.nz with an WRX EJ20 in it.
