How much should I offer on this Brat?

Featured Replies

There is a brown brat 1985 that I found behind a dealership.

The good points:

It is a 4 speed

t tops

jump seats (in very bad shape).

wagon wheels look good.

interior is not too bad.

body is fairly straight.

not too much rust underneath.

belongs to a subaru mechanic

120k

says air conditioner on the dash board. dont know if it has one, or if it works.

the rest:

rust near wheel wells.

2 small rust holes in the hood (?)

needs a gas tank, or needs this one cleaned out.

mechanic says the engine runs great when you pour gas in it.

did I mention its brown?

um....

What do you think about the gas tank? Should i expect a bad fuel pump and bad fuel line too?

Is this a big deal?

Is it worth offering $400?

Can I assume that it is dual range if it has a 4wd lever by the gear shift?

I am going to talk to the guy this week. I just want to make sure I ask the right questions.

thanks,

-Jack

Hello, First:

the tank and lines and pump. I don't know, it depends on what screwed up the tank.

Big deal? Not really, if the lines and pump are bad, just replace them.

I think it's worth 400 bucks.

All manual transmission Brats are dual-range.

yours looks awesome. THis one is dark brown.

I'll try to get some pictures up this week.

jump all over it for that price. brats are hard to find this side of the mississippi, at leas ones that didnt rust away.

brats are starting to get expensive just like the old volkswagen beetle.

that is what i would pay for a rusted out wagon, so sounds like its a steal!

most of you fuel and brake line runs INSIDE the car, the fuel pump is external, so if any of it needs replaced its all right there by the rear axle, and easy to get to.

$400 is what I was going to offer. I don't know what he expects. I figure I have a lot of work to day, body, paint, gas tank, who knows what else.

He can always say no.

Otherwise, shawn's is looking real, real good. I just dont have the time to go get it.

I think I know the basics, but I was hoping you guys could tell me the right things to look for when giving this Brat the once over. There is some rust, but it appears to all be cosmetic. I stuck my head underneath and it looked pretty good.

The guy said the cvs were good and it had new brakes and tires.

If it says AC on the dash can you assume it has a compressor? I know that a lot of the older subes had the option of being equiped w/ AC after the purchase.

Let me know.

thanks,

-Jack

if it has the "fitted for AC" sticker on the dash, there's a better chance that it doesn't have AC installed. out of maybe 15 I've had with that sticker, only 1 has had aftermarket AC installed....

I wouldn't be too authoratative about that detail. I have an 84 DL BRAT that is single range, no t-tops, no sliders, no ac, no tach. It seems to be equipped just like the DL wagons and hatches were.

BTW, first $500 gets it (it runs)(rust in bed and along bottom of doors)

Mark

I have a few pictures of his Brat that I can Email to anyone interested.

Jay

Jay,

Thanks for the offer of emailing pics to anybody. You could also have them linked here if you had a place to host them. If you send them my way, I will do that.

Jack, I am about 5 hours from you and I am down your way often as my family and twin bro live in Chumpton Roads; only mentioning that if you wanted this tan BRAT of mine.

Jay, the offer on borrowing my tandem axle carhauler is still there if you want to go pick up that RX in Fredricksburg.

Dennis, I could work out a way to bring it to you if you wanted it (I like your area alot).

Kindest Regards,

Mark
