Bronco II axles??

Featured Replies

So, I've been talking about doing solid axle(s), and I know it won't happen for at least a year or 2, but my buddy just stripped a Bronco II, and is trying to get rid of the axles. offered them to me for $10 each! We figured they're about the right width, but I haven't even seen them, and have no idea what's involved in tcasing/solid axles on a subie, I know it's rare, and involves lots of custom work. but for $10 each, I might be willing to put some ford in my car!

Talk me out of it!

Just cuz they are cheap don't mean they are good :)

Check your PMs!

...how good does an axle have to be?

A Bucking Bronco II has still got to have stronger axles than a Subaru!

It would be a upgrade and a solid axle. For $20 I wouldn't pass it up either.

What about the transfer case? It may save some fab time to reuse the Bronco drivelines and transfer case then fab up a connection for the tranny?

By good I didnt just mean strenght of the axles.

Will the leaf spring shackles line up to fasible locations for mounting? If not can they easily be remounted to different spots on the axle housing?

Will the axle diffs interfere with anything on the Subaru?

Does the Bronco II have a divorced t-case setup? If not what t-case are you then going to use?

Is servicing these axles, breakes, bearings, etc as cheap and easy as other otpions?

Steering is a whole nother ball game with the front axle.

I'm not saying they are bad; I'm just saying there's a lot to consider beyond the price :)

The rear axle of broncoII"s and rangers areen't bad axles and will hold up fine for around a 31" tire. The t-case is not a divorced set up on the bronco II. The front axle, a dana 35, would be tricky to get setup on the front becaause it is a "twin traction beam" set up. Heck, for $10 buck an axle, it's worth at least picking them up just for the price!

pass on those axles, well axle, cause the front is that stupid twin beam setup. I've gone the t-case route and examined solid axle options, and also worked on and wheeled with alot of solid axle trucks. My brother owns a ford ranger which has the same driveline as a BII, and I'm telling you it would be way more headache than going the toyota or nissan route, and you'd have a crappier setup in the end anyways.

I could go out and snag a pair of yota axles for $100 right now or some bronco II axles or jeep dana 30/35s for cheap/free, but the cost of the axles is nowhere near the biggest difficulty of going solid, the fabrication is.

That much I know, but I have never seen these axles, nor have I looked closely at nissan or toyota axles to compare, I just don't know what's closer to what I want.

I'll pass on these, and buy some good ones when the time comes

McBrat, if you've still got that at the midwest sub meet, and I've got some money, we'll talk

Keep your eye on the market place forums under http://www.mn-jeep.com and http://www.toyx4.com and you'll see cheap or even free dana and toyota axles often. Hell I think one guy on mn-jeep has some cheap/free dana axles he wants to get rid of up in Duluth.
