I have a 1987 GL-10 Turbo. With a 5speed dual range. With an intercooler, no cats, and a cone filter.

I get average of 18mpg. This seems pretty bad. I think, from reading other people's posts, that I should get at least 23mpg. Even when I don't drive it hard, I get about 18-19.

I have replaced the plugs (NGKs), cap and rotor, and wires.

I run either Shell mid-grade or Cheveron Mid grade gas.

Timing is at 20' BTDC oh yeah, no codes either.

there is another board member that has the same set up 18-`19 mpg, my a/t full time 4wd turbo gl-10 gets 22-23mpg city and 24-25 hi way , depending on how fast my wife drives 70-80 mph or 65 mph

Perhaps checking the coolant temperature sensor for the ECU will help. These sensors can fail and make the car run rich. You should be able to check the resistance on the sensor with the engine hot and check the specs on it to see if it is bad. If that doesn't help then maybe the O2 sensor needs to be replaced. If it hasn't been replaced in a long while you may want to start with it.

 

I averaged about 20 MPG with my '88 GL-10 Turbo AT model that I used to have.

Here a common gas milage problems with the EA82-T's :

 

 

Header Exhaust Leaks right at the heads (this eats lots of gas)

 

PCV Valve clogged (fouls plugs and causes engine to run rough and burn more gas)

 

O2 Sensor out of specs (makes car run richer than normal)

 

Coolant Temp Sensor (makes car allways run richer than normal)

 

 

After I changed my Coolant Temp Sensor I too had 18mpg and I'm now getting 25-27mpg or more depending on how I drive, but I also have a blueprinted and balanced engine with ported heads and 3-angle valve job which helps.

 

I just changed my O2 sensor last week and I'm starting to creap up to the 30mpg mark

How can you test an O2 sensor? Oh yeah, my purge control selenoid is out...that could be a problem too?

hey my turbo before i wrecked was getting 10-13mpg. i would of been thrilled to get 18. but it was fast so i put up with the crappy milage
