July 20, 200520 yr Just wondering if anyone has some experience driving an unmodified Forester on beaches. I've heard some people say they are great in the sand, but the Park Rangers where I want to drive it (Assateaque Island) say that they get stuck too often.
July 20, 200520 yr drop your tire pressure down to say.... 10-15 psi, you should be fine. Don't gun it or anything.. just take it nice & easy.
July 21, 200520 yr Momentum is key. Air'd down tires and keeping a pace up will float the car across most soft sand. Have fun!
July 21, 200520 yr or just some really huge ballloon tires will do the trick.of course in order to get them to fit you might need to lift your forester, but no biggie right?

July 22, 200520 yr Author What the rangers are saying is that there is not enough ground clearance for soft sand, but that contradicts what I've heard other people say.
July 22, 200520 yr The wider your tires the better, and bring a shovel when you go. There's only one way to find out, GO FOR IT
July 22, 200520 yr You should be all right, but if it is too soft, you may sink. Keep an eye out for the plastic sump guard. They can get ripped off quite easily. You should be fine with your tyre pressure dropped
July 22, 200520 yr you should be alright, just air down your tires, and keep momentum. Make sure you bring some thing to air your tires back up with when you are done. and have fun:drunk:
July 22, 200520 yr Carry some wood to put a jack on if you do get stuck. Maybe a few extra pieces to put under the tires to help you ramp out of the ruts you might get yourself buried in. Is the Forester stiick or auto.? Get a good jack (small floor one) don't rely on the factory jack to bail you out. Air down too!
July 22, 200520 yr and travel light. i think the forrester is heavy, not a good thing for what you're trying to do. wider tires would definitley be a plus. you can buy one size wider tires and they will fit your stock rims if you're really into doing this. less psi per contact area of tire helps plane the car out over the sand. but it does the same on water too so you'd loose a little bit of wet road performance..mostly on standing water and snow.
