on shot #29, it looks like a solid axle vehicle would've been dragging it's diffs over that bedrock pretty bad So tex's? brown wagon drowned, but Rooinators? ride went through? Thats what it looks like anyways. So, what stalled the wagon, water in the disty or water in the intake?

it was a combination of both. Im pretty sure that the disty was wet. Thats why it died in the first place. Then tex tried to start it then it sucked in water. Tex went through it two times slow before he got stuck.

The disty was dry when i checked it. The engine dying was very sudden. Not a puttering out that i'm accustomed too by a wet disty. More like something got in the way of the engine's stroke, and Blam! stopped it dead. I was very careful to only try and start it very very quickly 2 times while in the pool. It was obvious the engine was hydrolocked (water in combustion chambers, that was taken through the intake). The puddly inside of the air cleaner confirmed this. And so did the water that sprayed out of the spark plug holes.

 

That night she was only limping along on probally 3 cylinders if that. But by morning, everything was in tip top shape.

 

The reason I hydrolocked my engine is this: When you are doing a water crossing of any depth, you need to proceed slowly at first, if not all the way through. This allows you to build up a bow wake, a wave or flow of water in front of the car that guides the water around you, instead of into the car. I crossed it twice at a slow crawl, just putting along. I didn't have any problems. Then, i went at it all out. The plunging into the pool at speed and just barreling through cause the water to go everywhich way, uncontrolled. Thus ultimately leading it to my intake, and into my engine.

hmm sounds like time for a snorkel eh?

he doesn't need a snorkel yet. just to put the antifreeze bottle over his intake. that's what i have and never have had a problem. sealed disty on mine.

 

That trip was awesome i did a total of 15+ different trail runs!! and was exactly what i needed!

Did you make it up to the top of upper 311? If so, what did you think? Which other trails did you do?

upper 311 no one wanted to try . oh well another time. hopefully i'll be up here next year for another get together. we did 519 a and b several times, 102 several times (worm) also the easy 102 from staging area to the base of 102. one undesignated trail in the area of 102. the easy trail across from 520. up 520 (rockslide), trail 199, and 311 A up and down. those are the ones i can remember. i ran part way up a few trails while brian sat below. and there was little likely that open diff was going up most of those....
