September 23, 200520 yr OK, so I'm getting the stage 2 delta cam profile and I want a few more RPMs. Does anyone know the stock valve spring pressure? I don't want to shim them if I can find some other springs that will hold 10-20% more pressure. I might have to take the spings in and compare them to some chevy or ford springs. Maybe I can get some titanium retainers to work on them too. Has anyone tried using solid lifters in the ea-82 engines? Any thoughts???
September 23, 200520 yr you might want to compare springs from an EJ22 to them. I'm going to be looking into it as well for the new engine for my RX...
September 24, 200520 yr id shim them, theres no way your gettin close to coil bind. im guessing the springs out of the er27 are the same as the ea82s, and those dont float up to 7grand. whats that cam supposed to pull to?
September 24, 200520 yr I know the cams pulled HARD to 8k on 3 other setups i had. I imagine...that with springs....we could take them to 9 before the cams are effectively 'out of parameters'
September 24, 200520 yr According to Chilton's, the EA82 has the same installed height as the ER27, but around 12% greater "Spring Test Pressure"... I haven't found definition for that, so I don't know if it is spring rate or something else. Either way, I imagine that you can assume that it is apples-vs.-apples, and the EA82 has a higher spring rate. Not floating at 7k is not much of an endorsement, especially for an OHC engine. RAM has springs, etc, for EA81 that people seem to use in 9k rpm engines. Might be worth looking into, but then again, stock NEW springs might allow the same.
September 24, 200520 yr Author Cool, I think 8,000 should be plenty. I might have to make a test fixture and do some comparisons.
September 25, 200520 yr Cool, I think 8,000 should be plenty. I might have to make a test fixture and do some comparisons. Fixture? FIXTURE?! We don't need no Stinkin' Fixture! Just rev your engine past its redline and see where it falls flat on its face.
September 25, 200520 yr don't know if they are the same as EA-81 springs, but www.ramengines.com has better springs for the EA81 that might work. give em a call, couldnt' hurt, and the 50 bucks you spend on new springs is worth it if you but another 2k into the engine anyway
September 25, 200520 yr my er27 seems to fall flat on it's fACE AS YOU PUT IT AROUND 7000 i would like stronger springs as well edit: lets say seven grand, i am having major engine problems at the moment
September 25, 200520 yr just remember, strong springs alone might let you rev higher, but you might not be guilding power up that high(especialy if you dont have a big boosted turbo). so unless you have a cam, dont get heavier springs.
September 25, 200520 yr If your putting a newly ground cam in, its a good idea to run your standard springs for the first few hundred kms or so (or so i have been told).
September 27, 200520 yr Author I have a ported spider intake, ported heads, .60comp/.63exh T3 turbo, external wastegate, 2" stainless header, delta stage 2 cams and huge water intercooler. I need me some springs. I would be happy if the power band would pull to 7500. This engine is still on the stand and getting ready to drop into the RX. After yesturday's rallyX, and after seeing the oil all over in the engine bay, it's about time to think about installing it! Man, that was a blast!
September 27, 200520 yr Like was mentioned, the EA81 aviation engine springs might be a possibility. Have you looked into that at all?
September 27, 200520 yr Author Aviation springs? I haven't thought about that yet! I know some guys with them too, I'll see what's up.
